Waatea News Column: Prime Minister’s State of the Nation Speech an open threat to the poorest amongst us

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told the country over the weekend in his State of the Nation Speech that New Zealand needed ‘tough love’ and cutbacks some would fund unacceptable. It is difficult taking a ‘tough love’ approach to our social woes from a multimillionaire who owns 7 properties and holidays in Hawaii. That juxtaposition is made more extreme when you consider the last week’s Government policy.

By reducing benefit rises for beneficiaries and the disabled so that National can afford their tax cuts, National will reduce payments to the disabled by $2300 per year while pushing up to 13 000 children into poverty, this is alongside the 8000 tobacco deaths and we have a Government who are actively reducing benefits and health programmes so that wealthy landlords can get more tax cuts!

It is difficult to take the Prime Minister seriously in terms of his ‘tough love’ because pushing children into poverty, taking from the disabled and allowing 8000 tobacco deaths all so wealthy Kiwis can get ore doesn;ty sound like ‘tough love’ it sound like ‘tough love for the poor, exploitation for the rich’.

Government’s have an obligation to lift everyone, not just their wealthy donors! This Government is asking the poor to pay for rich people’s tax cuts and calling that ‘democracy’.

In barely 4 months, this Government has managed to lose our collective moral compass.

  1. Seriously why would anyone with an ounce of credibility listen to anything any right wing government says…

    take this on immigration…

“In late 2022, the Labour Government also tweaked or really opened up their immigration policy settings in order to help get more workers in. At the time, the message coming from a lot of the business community and political and business commentators was that this was going to be a real race between other nations like Canada and Australia and the UK to attract the best immigrants and that New Zealand was being left behind.”

Dann said that actually hasn’t been the case, with New Zealand seeing 2.8 per cent growth to Australia’s 2.4 per cent.

In the wake of these record figures, Immigration Minister Erica Stanford told TVNZ’s Q+A that officials were looking at potentially tweaking the settings now to deal with the growth.

Dann said that was “pretty ironic” that National was now considering restricting immigration, when they heavily criticised the Labour Government for being too restrictive in the aftermath of Covid-19 border closures.”

Remember National great immigration ponzi scheme through the mid 2000’s and remember the under investment in infrastructure. Right wing parties and their business cohorts wreck the economy.

  2. The policy is aimed at the recidivist bludgers who game the system at everybody else’s expense.
Turned out Jacinda was kind to too many of them.

    • FFS Jack. Luxon said the “vast majority” would not be impacted by these changes so how many “recidivists” are we talking?

      • Yes Blair, seems Jack was being very selective.
Can I suggest Jack that most of those that can work are trying, what are Luxons solutions to those gaining employment if they keep being turned away because of the stigma of being on the benefit a d the labels given to them by this very ” unkind” government.
Turns out Luxon and solo mum Upston want to beat them with a stick.

    • The idea of “recidivist bludgers” only works if society is fragmenting, or in our case, consecutive governments deliberately tearing the place apart. I don’t expect you to understand that. Your problem has nothing to do with anyone else.

    • Luxon also had a train wreck interview on RNZ Ingrid had to say okay PM we have to go now, and she hardly got a word in. I thought he might run out of breath he was speed talking and he belted all this shite out of his mouth, and it still sounded like he was campaigning. How the fuck did this man become PM? oh! the rich paid 8 million plus for him to ruin our country.

  3. Has someone actually fact checked what this bs artist says? How many new (in the last 6 years) central government regulations have actually been passed? Where is all this new red tape? It just like Willis and her bullshit comments about the state of the books. Apparently real people that invest in government bonds have a bit more of a clue.

  4. If running the country into the ground is classed as getting back on track then the current government is well on the way to achieving its goal. As long as the 1% survive they will claim to be a success as they have consistently ignored the needs of most of the country whenever they have been in power.
