A failure of moral and ethical leadership as government ministers swan off for Christmas leaving Palestinians facing Israel’s genocidal rampage in Gaza

As government ministers swan off for Christmas and summer holidays, Israel’s genocidal slaughter in Gaza continues. According to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor

“Since October 7, more than 10,000 children have been killed or are lost under rubble and presumed dead, according to a report by the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. At least 24,000 children have lost one or both parents in Israeli attacks and about 18,000 have been injured with some in critical condition”

This is all lost on Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters who have still failed to:

  1. Utter a single word of condemnation for Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza – although they did condemn the killing of Israeli civilians (Palestinians civilians count for less with the new government)
  2. Condemn Israel for deliberately withholding adequate food, water and fuel from the people of Gaza
  3. Condemn the war crimes such as collective punishment, forced displacement of civilians and the carpet-bombing of densely populated civilian areas with the inevitable outcomes we are seeing daily
  4. Condemn the targeting of schools, hospitals, ambulances, journalists etc
  5. Call for an International Criminal Court investigation into war crimes since October 7th – including the crimes of genocide and apartheid

Mr Luxon and Mr Peters are still lamely calling for “steps towards a ceasefire” for a situation described as catastrophic by the United Nations and genocidal across the non-western world.

This is a failure of moral and ethical leadership. It is an expression of anti-Palestinian racism which has a tenacious grip on the new government.

Any decent government would sever all links with Israel, including expelling the apartheid Israel ambassador, till Israel stops its slaughter of Palestinians and provides everyone “between the river and the sea” with equal rights

Rallies, marches and vigils will take place across the country again this weekend. Details of the events are on our Facebook page here.

  1. Pakistan severed links with Israel eons ago and Iran is doing its damnest through its terrorist entities to annihilate Israel. Are these your exemplars of a “decent” government?

    • Pakistan and Iran have problems but they have not killed over 20000 Palestinian people since October 7 in what can only be described as a deliberate effort by Israel to kill as many people in Gaza as possible.

      • You may be too young to know that millions of Hindus and Muslims were killed in the intractable conflict that led to the partition of India and creation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Then up to 3 million more were killed, 10 million ethnically cleansed and 400,000 Hindu women raped when that republic went to war with East Pakistan. That was your real genocide, not the inflated number the Hamas-run Gazan Ministry of Health release to stoke hatred against Israelis.

  2. The US and Israel are making fools of the United Nations.

…UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday that the Israeli offensive is creating massive obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid inside Gaza.
Many people are measuring the effectiveness of the humanitarian operation in Gaza based on the number of trucks allowed to unload aid across the Egyptian-Gaza border. This is a mistake, said Guterres.

“The real problem is that the way Israel is conducting this offensive is creating massive obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid inside Gaza,” he told reporters.
An effective aid operation in Gaza requires security, staff who can work in safety, logistical capacity, and the resumption of commercial activity. These four elements do not exist, he said.
Security for aid delivery is absent. The intense Israeli bombardment and active combat in densely populated urban areas throughout Gaza threaten the lives of civilians and humanitarian aid workers alike. The United Nations waited 71 days for Israel finally to allow aid to enter Gaza via the Kerem Shalom crossing. The crossing was then hit while aid trucks were in the area, he said.
The humanitarian operation requires staff who can live and work in safety. Some 136 UN staff members in Gaza have been killed in 75 days — something unprecedented in the history of the United Nations….

For conspiring with Israel to kill United Nations staff, the US must have their veto right suspended.

  3. After negotiating the latest humanitarian pause in Gaza the Israeli UN ambassador Gilad Erdan slammed the Security Council for not condemning Hamas for the October 7th attack that started the current Gaza “war “.
Eli Cohen the Israeli Foreign Minister said in response, “Israel will continue the war until the release of all the abductees and the elimination of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.”
The Israeli governent/IDF October 7th “atrocities” statement is all lies and with each day that passes the evidence is clear that the IDF indiscriminately and intentionally killed Israelis and Palestinians alike.

It is heartening to see a staunch group of regular commenters on this blog who are holding the line in these very dark times.

    • “After negotiating the latest humanitarian pause in Gaza the Israeli UN ambassador Gilad Erdan slammed the Security Council….” Pukahu Road

It’s amazing how powerful mainstream media is in sowing the impression in people’s minds that the UN Security Council just voted for a “pause”. The latest UN Security Council resolution that passed with a US abstention, did not call for a pause. The resolution that has just been passed after the US delayed its passing three times, called on Israel to allow in more aid. That’s it. The resolution did not call for a “pause” despite the fact that Antonio Guterres said it is impossible for the UN to deliver aid under bombardment. Despite the fact that the day before the vote was taken Israel killed four UN aid workers trying to deliver aid. The aid could not then be delivered.
No pause, and aid delivery bombed. The US and Israel are making fools of all of us.

      • You are absolutely right Pat and I agree the UN Security Council has lost all credibilty as these votes continuely fail to deliver.
        Your criticism is fair.

  4. “Mr Luxon and Mr Peters are still lamely calling for “steps towards a ceasefire” ”
Nothing lame about that. It is hardcore zionism. The State of Israel has defined the steps towards a ceasefire as consisting of the release of all prisoners held by the Palestinians and the unconditional surrender of Hamas. The Realm of New Zealand supports Israel in that demand.
Think about it. What steps can Israel take “towards a ceasefire”? None at all. It could cease fire at any time. It needs to do nothing else before Hamas would also cease fire.
So New Zealand supports the continuing genocide in Gaza. Simple as that.
