Wait, what?

Biden to open embassies in Cook Islands and Niue as he welcomes Pacific leaders for Washington summit

President Joe Biden is set to announce the opening of new US embassies on Cook Islands and Niue on Monday as the Democratic administration aims to demonstrate to Pacific Island leaders that it remains committed to increasing American presence in the region.

The announcement about the new diplomatic missions in the South Pacific comes as Biden prepares to welcome leaders to Washington for the two-day US-Pacific Island Forum Summit. Talks are expected to heavily focus on the impact of climate change in the region.

Why are we allowing the Realm of NZ to be encroached upon by the Americans?

Surely our job as an independent voice in the pacific is to protect our Pacific Neighbours in ensuring their agency over the interests of Washington and Beijing, especially when that pacific Neighbour is part of our Realm!

Meanwhile, the ramifications of war in Ukraine is being paid for in Africa…

Aid groups in Africa face biggest funding shortfalls in decades amid new humanitarian emergencies, price increases, Ukraine war

…we are not ready for the conflict coming, and the total refusal to focus on Foreign Affairs this election is a travesty.

Ukraine and Russia have every chance to metastasize, Africa is on the brink of rogue nation status as regional players fight proxy wars, China has internal economic issues  and Trump may get re-elected next year.

  1. Our (and Australian) treatment of our Pacific neighbours over decades is the reason that they are vulnerable to both Chinese and American encroachment. You reap what you don’t sow in our case.

  2. When you consider the people seeking power in the USA & their ambitions I suspect you ain’t seen nothing yet. At least you recognise the problem which is better than most of the population.

  3. The US opening embassies in our Pacific neighbours are the least of our problems.

Personally I have no problems with this.

Andrew Little’s decision to go against this country’s democratically decided nuclear free status to join the AUKUS nuclear club presents a far bigger danger.
Without any consultation or debate, the incoming National Party government, looks likely to fast track Andrew Little’s initiative under urgency, with the full support of the Labour Party.

New Zealanders will have no say in this decision.

Both the Labour and National Parties are the parties of war.

Only a vote for TPM can ensure that whether or not this country will again be dragged into another overseas war, will be democratically debated in parliament.

Te Pāti Māori say a ‘transformative’ defence and foreign affairs policy, will see its MPs vote against overseas military support, by New Zealand forces.
Co-leaders Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Rawiri Waititi unveiled the neutrality policy during their AGM, calling it “Rangatiratanga and Mana Māori Motuhake in action”; if in power, they would withdraw from the Five Eyes security pact between Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and the US.

“We will no longer be a political football in the wars of imperial powers. We will no longer act as a Pacific spy base for the Five-Eyes Alliance,” Waititi said.

These are independent countries free to make their own decisions with whoever they choose to have diplomatic relations with.

  5. This is why our ridiculously anal approach to government debt levels has to end. All this hand ringing over future generations having to pay back debt ( happy to let them face climate Armageddon however) implies you won’t be paying one way or another. I’d rather pay debt than toll fees to the Chinese government.

  6. We haven’t seen such interest in the Pacific by the States since they blew it to bits with nuclear explosions.

    • USA suddenly taking an interest in the Pacific after China investing in the Pacific Islands and expanding their influence in a number of Pacific Island Nations.

  7. My general impression of 7 Houses is that he isn’t as bright as is portrayed. But the fact he even has the slightest inclination to allow the CCP Chinese Criminal Party to be involved in the construction of any form of infrastructure in NZ, proves that he is more than the least sharpest tool in the shed. No, he is more likely the biggest, dumbest meathead ever to run the country. –

Not only is chance of the project suffering from quality, but any project they are involved in means little or no input from local contractors. Also comes with free with foreign influence, a barrel of fish hooks, and dodgy back room dealings. No doubt that would appeal to NatCCP
