I spy with my 5 Eyes something beginning with war.
Our new Defence strategy clearly paints China as our main geopolitical threat, and while China certainly enjoys extending its influence via trade dominance and debt ridden infrastructure projects alongside an authoritarian mass surveillance regime that is most certainly committing a cultural genocide against the Uyghurs, diplomacy and independence is how we face those challenges.
We are not going to get ourselves sucked into another fucking American war!
The Dozen nuclear subs America just handed to Australia will have next generation hypersonic  missiles meaning they could sit off the coast of China and hit China before China knew it had been hit.
These dozen nuclear subs aren’t a defensive move by Australia, UK and America, it’s a first strike platform and the hawks in China will see it as a closing window of their military superiority.
When you give a former penal colony where the inmates literally took over the asylum the power of nuclear military energy, it’s conflict generating.
We need to protect NZ, we need to remain independent, we need to consider neutrality, we need to lift our GDP military spend to 3%, we need a new Drone industry, we need more special forces and we need more military machinery that can project civil defence capacity.
Are we really going to war for Taiwan?
Really?
NZ should be friend to all, enemy to none, but we need to acknowledge that independence comes with a higher military cost.
We do not want to be controlled by China and we do not want to be controlled by America.
Diplomacy first, Independence always, greater defensive military now.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

You gotta wonder at the Aussies when you look over the ditch at Australians letting their country be used for US target practice.
New Zealanders have too much self respect for that cringe worthy level of self abasement.

Dunno about that. Key was happy to let Kiwi film workers be exploited to keep Hollywood tycoons happy. In fact I think that John Key changed New Zealand employment law to keep those show biz types happy. Didn’t Clark send the SAS off secretly to help America in Afghanistan and Key send those SAS in dead of night to do a Hit&Run on innocent Afghani peasant women and children, enemies of the good old US of A.
Why don’t the Australians just paint a bullseye on themselves and be done with it?

Australian patriots had nothing to do with the subversion of their nation, Pat. Just like we, here, had no say in the filthy Americans putting an American military base intended for war against people who look like Chinese to Americans in Mahia, the so-called ‘Rocket Lab’.
The only solution to American occupation is to eject all Americans and American-lovers.
Mohammed Khan But the SIS sees no threat from America whatsoever, no involvement, no influence, no meddling either offshore or onshore. It’s almost as if the SIS does not know that America exists, and that it’s military industrial complex is not a comic book fantasia, or that stupid tinsel-eyed PM’s have worshipped the USA like some biblical golden calf.
‘when you give a former penal colony where the inmates literally took over the asylum the power of nuclear military energy, it’s conflict generating.’
A totally unnecessary,fatuous comment.
“we need to lift our GDP military spend to 3%, we need a new Drone industry, we need more special forces and we need more military machinery that can project civil defence capacity.”
I don’t know how you square this idiocy with you otherwise sound observations of US hegemony and our need to be friends to all and threat to none.
Be perfectly clear, a cardboard shield is no more effective than a paper one on a storm and no amount of spending will ever provide NZ with anything other than a token, showcase, paper defence force, useless is the face of serious aggression.
If you want to puff out you chest and pretend to be able to fight it alone out when push comes to shove, then you are looking to oblivion.
To ally yourself with a big bully like USA may act as a deterrent but brings with it an obligation to stand with the bully in all their other self-serving conflicts.
That’s the very nature and price of military alliance.
USA will only protect us if its in their interest in any event. Do not expect any altruism from them, alliance or otherwise. They will set the rules.
Ultimately all armed conflict leads to misery for all.
Spending money on a pretend military without an functional alliance is just money down the drain. It’s money that could be spent on things that matter, lifting us out of the morose that libertarian economics has left us in.
In my view both options, seeking alliance and thinking we can build a credible military force, are highways to nowhere, neither provide the protection you seem to believe.
Give us our ARs back, we’ll defend you against any foreign invaders that step foot on our shores. No taxpayer costs either, unlike when you brought them off us.
Im pretty sure we will need more than pick up trucks with gun racks.
You can invade any country, whether you can successfully occupy it long term is another matter, especially when your troops keep getting killed while enjoying meals in cafes or sleeping.
Absolute nonsense. The Americans, and their filthy puppets couldn’t defeat the brave people of Afghanistan or Yemen, armed with little more than small arms.
Do you think so little of New Zealanders, American-lover, that you think we couldn’t do the same against an invasion by humanity’s enemies (the Americans)?
Since any serious conflict between US and either Chia or Russia in the degree that seriously threatens either of them; or threatens the US will inevitably quickly go nuclear there will be no winners except possibly us if we cen stay out of it so completely as to be of no interest to either side. The more likely conflict becomes the more important it is for us to remain neutral. we can’t materially assist either side, only incur the wroth on one or other . But we also need to remain independent economically and not become owned by anyone , certainly not by Blackrock.

Taking the GDP defence spend from about 2% to 3% is quiet an increase. Ain’t inflation a bitch.
NZDF has recruiting and retention issues so improving pay to at or near market rates, the equivalent Australian civilian role easily gets paid double what NZDF personal gets so about double pay rates. Housing for all. Defence insurance, retirement package. Or atleast bring personal numbers back to 1999 levels so about 18,000 get rid of the reserves and go full time at full pay rates. Restore military trades training cooks, orderlies, clerks etc to full service status. And get them some new gear, more anti tank missiles, surface to air missiles anti ship missiles and heavier artillery for the army but missiles, missiles, missiles.
Inflation is such that it will eat the one third spending increase meaning we can only do more of what we already do. So 2 more P8 sub killers. A few more NH-90 replacements and navy helos with more numbers. A few more C-130s and King Airs or a tier 2 marine search and rescue so the P8s can focuse on information warfare or whatever tier 1 stuff. Navy should just buy 6 frigates about 4000 tons from Korea and four Aotearoa replinisment ships and maybe one more litoral operations ship and new decentralised basing system but army numbers should be kept where it is at about 8,000.
Civilian and defence rolls are very different. You can’t have a roided up police force they’re designed to help build society and hold it together the military is complete chaos with different equipment at 3% spending today will have to be highly specialised.
What makes New Zealand prosper is that people want come here for a better life. Not to be more wealthy so to speak but better. Even at 5% GDP spending with today’s inflation it doesn’t say to any nation that we are coming for you says to vulnerable people it’s safe here from the people with AR-15s or whatever.
