Justice Minister Kiri Allan involved in car crash in Wellington

Justice Minister Kiri Allan was taken into police custody after being involved in a car crash in Wellington, The Post understands.

Witnesses say the East Coast MP’s car struck a parked car on Evans Bay Parade in Roseneath on Sunday evening.

For the love of Christ, it’s too much now.

She has resigned her Ministerial Portfolios after a reckless car incident last night where she resisted arrest and was over the limit.

She was a brilliant MP and a shining light for the future, but her constant personal problems and ‘relationships’ were simply too much.

You stupid, silly Girl!

What a fucking disappointment and what a terrible let down!

Go deal with your emotional luggage Kiri, good luck for the future, but it ain’t in Labour any longer.

Expect her to pop back up on the Māori Party in a couple of years from now.

Chippy bent over backwards for Kiri, the entire Caucus did, but there’s a point where you just have to say, ‘this is on you’.

She has failed herself.

What a dreadful waste.

  1. It’s sad when one could guess exactly what she was locked up for! Its now how bad will the Labour implosion will be, not that they have any hope of forming a government. And worse, the cupboard is bare for a replacement!

      • Arrogance?? The Minister of Justice of New Zealand has been arrested, held in custody and charged, one of which was resisting police. What has this country become?

        And it just so happens, exactly when the world’s media are watching us with the Womens Football World Cup. What the fuck must they think? What are FIFA thinking right now? Especially after the past week!

        Sorry Mike, but I expect far better, especially after Chippy went beyond the call of duty to help her too!

    • She wasn’t “locked up”, stop your salivating.
      She was at the station for 3 or 4 hours after the crash then released – having gone through interviewing, test, etc.
      While if you’ve ever been taken into a station over something, you’d know how incredibly slow and drawn out police can be over most things.
      * Not being an apologist for her, just saying you’re wrong about “locked up”. That’s all.

      She was at the station for 3 or 4 hours after the crash then free to leave, having gone through interviewing, test, etc.
      While anyone who’s had to deal with police at a station over anything more than just real simple easy stuff knows how slow and support drawn-out they can be.

    • The officers would have been going out of their way not to arrest her. Under this police commissioner arresting Labour MPs is a career limiting move. Her behaviour must have been truly reprehensible.

  3. So who gets justice now – Phil Twyford? Amusingly the left of Labour’s 2 brightest stars in Wood and Allan are gone. Who from the left is going to step up. Mahuta? Angry?

    The interesting charge is resisting arrest – was there “don’t you know who I am” moment or did she have to be physically restrained?

    • David Parker is also one of their best ministers.
      I suspect Duncan Webb will be moved into cabinet, long overdue.

    I’m starting to see National as more stable – it’s been a while since they had a rogue MP in OCT 2022 B.Kuriger.

    Greens – well they just don’t care & do/say whatever they think in arrogance.

    TMP who cares as they are more superior than anyone else and dump their mp’s for internal whanau.

  7. Sad really, not every one is cut out for the “Bear Pit” as Ex Labour and Alliance MP Jim Anderton once called the NZ Parliamentary system. Kiri had a nasty brush with cancer too, and should be accorded some respect–as was Todd Muller when he had his meltdown. Todd is actually respected by many now for being a male willing to discuss mental health issues.

    I suspect the media channels will be putting the slipper in hard with Kiri though.

    • Todd Miller didn’t get charged with resisting arrest after drink driving and crashing his car. If he had I’m sure we could all imagine what the media coverage would be like.

      • Unfortunately this is true. And unfortunately her actions, getting into a car and driving drunk is going to have repercussions for the left, probably, and everyone else. Wow. What the hell happened. Taxi anyone. I guess classic case of spit the dummy. Too bad she just didn’t quit while she was ahead. But, nobody plans this shit so we have to have sympathy. I hope she will be alright.

        • I have been through some very tough times in my life, cancer realationship break up, on meds, never ever drove drunk. Ever. And I certainly had far less resources than Kiri such as access to taxis, money for treatment.

  8. Anyone who has suffered from a mental problem will have sympathy for Kiri Allen. It is not a cold that you get over quickly the problem has likely been building for years and while need time to heal . It is obvious she needed a longer break and taking a srep away from the pressure of her ministry.
    I wish her well.

  10. What we are seeing is the result of the emotional and illogical philosophy that has been the basis of how this Labour Government has operated.

    The policies of debt and lenience have led us to be a country that is poorer, dumber and more dangerous. Ardern could see the country turning on her, but she is so image conscious that she resigned before her overseas reputation was destroyed. She put herself first.

    Hipkins – so often the only reliable set of hands for Ardern in a crisis ( despite his own marriage suffering) must know how little talent his party actually has. To reinstate Allan was a mistake and now we are seeing how unhinged she actually is.

    Allan is one of many Ministers who simply aren’t fit for duty. Having her own personal meltdown will shine the spotlight her but we should never forget how many incompetent Ministers have led this country to be worse off than it has been in a long time.

    • That’s what you get when you load up on ideology/ diversity etc and meritocracy is a dirty word.

      I do think Kiri is suffering from stress and that she was promoted over her level of resilience too quickly. Her behaviour has been unwinding bit by bit and this is the result. CT did a piece not long ago about Luxons ‘suitability’ for politics but all the points he made about how a politician is grown and cut their teeth and the process, apply here.

      Look at Kiri and compare her to Brownlee, horrid man that he is. Just watch him on TDB or at a debate and you will see what I am talking about.

      Politicians are not born, they need to be tough enough to start and then they need to be tempered over time and in the all new progressive Labour they have thrown that out as so old fashioned, too much ‘of the patriarchy’ but in essence, this is why they cant deliver anything. Sometimes recruiting the wrong candidates (resilience, intellect etc) and then overusing those they think are good and promoting them past their level of competence (Michael Wood?) and basically are burning through people one after the other. Tinetti and Ginny are more examples of very inexperienced people and it looks like the majority of them have no idea what’s in the cabinet manual, how to manage people etc and on and on.

  12. It’s not just Labour, the calibre of politicians generally is abysmal. The Nats are an unedifying bunch, the Greens function like mean girls at school, they’re shockers; the Maori Party are silly immature clowns who disrespect Parliament. Pity that Clark’s shadow lingers over pollies, she seemed a bit of a ball breaker in the Parliamentary Party, no more the Joan of Arc of the oppressed than her acolyte the sole source of truth was.

    How’s Winston? There’s a man who knows how to hold his liquor in spite of Slater’s pathetic night light attempts to show otherwise. Anybody can hit a parked car, but adults know not to drink drive.

    • That might have been a Green MP to the police trying to avert a gang clash in the early morning hours on Courtney Place, Wellington.

  16. When the Minister of Justice is driving over the limit + driving recklessly + crashing into a parked car + resisting arrest there clearly needs to be comprehensive changes made (i.e. a change of govt).

    She will be right at home in the Maori Party where anything goes because you know – colonialism . .

    • That’s why Waka Kotahi should reduce the speed of roads to 0. Only trucks and drunk government officials should be allowed to drive on a road, taxpayers can pay for them. Think with the savings, Waka Kotahi could get more management staff to eulogise who safe everyone now is and run non stop commercials, now the public can’t use the road!

        Would that have been done to a man and would anyone have yelled ‘pull his pants down’?
        They are all class, the attendees of these meetings.

  22. Tired of listening to the mental health issues of the worried well. Try and get a dose of reality of the average person in NZ, not on a $300+k salary with everything paid for like travel and accomodation, when they have some personal crisis.

    With suicide the media try not to draw attention to it, because by way of social contagion others start committing suicide. With mental health in NZ, it is shouted loud and proud now. Like suicide many others seem to be coming down with mental illness the more they promote it.

    This is not to minimise people with serious mental illness but more to say, having a tough time shouldn’t allow people to get away with breaking the law or not following the rules and then blaming mental illness for their actions.

    Too many violent attacks and bad behaviour in NZ and it seems to be getting worse. They need to have a media blackout on all the many woke type reporting as mental illness as some kind of affliction that everyone has, and your behaviour is justified. Nope!

    Too much individualisation happening in NZ so that the biggest perps feelings and perceived hardships including their fragile mental health, are more important than their victims right to have a safe place to live and work in.   25. Yes, Queeny we have a very bad culture in our country downright nasty, vindictive, backstabbing and some like to kick people when they are down, and they are very quick to put the boot in. And you can’t blame anyone for this as this shit happens all the time. We have a woman missing in Christchurch and we have another woman in court for killing her three young kids. Too many people don’t want to deal with people suffering from mental illnesses. And I know firsthand what it is like it’s difficult my sister suffers from mental illness, and my whanau and I have looked after her for 40 years but it’s extremely hard on families. And our mental health system is in disarray, and it has been for a very long time.

  26. A very dumb move for someone in her position but we don’t know all the facts. The ones we do know are
    She had an alcohol reading of 250. Back in my day it was 400 and then it was lowered to 200 which isn’t a high level – so she wasn’t really “drunk”
    Anyone who has been on a protest knows that “resisting arrest” is the charge that police use when they don’t have anything real to hold a person for. She could have been just mouthy or abusive and violent, we don’t know yet.
    She ran into the back of a parked black ute on a dark stretch of road with lots of cycle lanes, plastic poles, judder bars and ghost markings on the road which even confuse careful sober drivers in the daytime.
    I’ll hold off on the schadenfreude until all the facts are in – which of course may be never.

    • And the latest update is that she was charged with careless driving and refusing to accompany an officer, a big difference from the original story.

    • I know that stretch of road. It is relatively wide for Wellington. The cycle lanes if they were ther would have protected the parked car.

      • Anker. She may need to get her peripheral vision tested. People often don’t know that it’s off until they have a medical, or misjudge something.

      • I know it too! Winding, narrow in parts, dark in parts and all the extra clutter that wcc insists on putting in especially at Evans Bay end is a friggin menace. A momentary lapse of concentration or genuine careless driving? Who knows, not me yet.

  27. The ramifications are going to be so far reaching for women in Parliament – that is the tragedy. In as much as I feel for this woman I am both sad and angry as she had so much potential for leading the party. You are right – it is a frocking waste. What is hidden though is the cogence and calm of a man who has so much leadership potential but may have been stymied by women. In all my years of teaching, commuity and business, I have campaigned for more women in Parliament ….BAH BLOODY HUMBUG

  28. Martyn, you might have the tone of this wring She needs to be accountable for her terrible actions and she will be. But surely there is a place for her to rehabilitate and return. Run in the East Coast as the Labour candidate and let the voters decide. If they say no then that is the decision of the people to be respected.

  31. Everyone seems rather irrational about this situation. All trying to blame outside parties for the dismal situation. This was a train wreck happening in slow motion for the last six months. There will be further dismal revelations about all this soon, now that certain barriers may fall.
