Dawn Raids and Oranga Tamariki Fight Clubs: Minister Sepeloni and Minister Davis are being poorly served by their Staff

Sepuloni ‘unaware’ dawn raids would continue after 2021 apology

Acting Prime Minister Carmel Sepuloni says she was “unaware” dawn raids would continue after the 2021 Government apology.

“I thought they’d already ended,” she told Breakfast this morning.

“We were unaware of the practise that was ongoing by Immigration New Zealand and so deeply disappointed when we found out that these were being undertaken.”

An independent review, triggered after an April dawn raid on a Pasifika overstayer, has recommended a law change to limit or ban dawn raids.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) — of which Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is part — acknowledged yesterday its “guidance” had not reflected the apology and it was “prioritising putting this right”.

MBIE chief executive Carolyn Tremain said she’s committed to “continuing a pause” on “out-of-hours visits” to residential addresses by compliance officers for deportation purposes, following the release of the review.

The extraordinary admission by the Deputy Prime Minister that she thought the Dawn Raid apology meant the policy would no longer be used is a jaw dropping moment that clearly signals a high ranking politician not knowing the basic mechanics of the issue they are discussing and highlights a ghastly lack of preparation by the Deputy Prime Minister’s staff.

The Deputy PM should have been fully briefed so that she could not make this dreadful blunder.

Likewise Minister Kelvin Davis was poorly served by not knowing staff involved in the appalling Oranga Tamariki fightclubs only had 2 weeks training and numerous reports warning of this very environment.

Politics is exhausting and staff can shut down and not see the minefields their Ministers are walking into. There needs to be some extraordinary bucking up of standards as we go into the election because this appalling sloppiness is unacceptable with so much at stake this October.

  1. We have immigration laws yet the staff at the coalface charged with enforcing them, A, have to do so under some bizarre Queensbury gentlemanly rules. One assumes doing so during lunch and high tea are also forbidden so who knows when if ever the immigration laws can be put into effect. And B, a useless pill like Andrew Little apologies for them doing their jobs? Labour and actually putting laws into action don’t connect, do they?

  2. These ministers get good money to be on top of the portfolios they are given . The public servant numbers have increased dramatically since Labour took over but the level of compedance has declined this is why Labour is on its way out the door .

  3. But didn’t the then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern make an apology, and wasn’t there a big Pacifica ceremony with her at the center of attention?

So while all that was being beamed out and a big song and dance made, it was still happening. Pretty bloody shallow apology then.

  4. On Dawn Raids:
    1. These raids are only occurring because visitors to NZ are breaking the law by overstaying their visa etc.
    2. If we went to another country and overstayed our visa do you honestly think similar wouldn’t occur?
    3. Europeans are not often the target of these raids because they will not be breaking the law and a lot of them are not interested in living in NZ in the first place (and if Europeans are indeed overstayers sure knock on their door early in the morning as well).
    4. These raids are happening often at dawn because that is when the people they are looking for are most likely to be at home – no point doing them during the middle of the day. You also think the police etc otherwise would choose to be doing this very early in the morning?
    5. The police / govt have zero to apologise for.

  6. I like Minister Carmel Sepuloni but her lack of knowledge as a Deputy Prime Minister over Nato and other things journalists have interviewed her on with Chippy away has shown her up very negatively. Is this Labour sheltering or a lack of personal development in the job? Increased from 3 to 5 portfolios due to Woody.

  7. The dawn-raids is a national party policy however its a known fact that these 2 main parties share cross bipartisan support on a range of issues like the TOW.

  8. Oh dear. I wonder if the Minister for Police knows about what happened at Albert Park ? She might have to watch GB News or read the UK Spectator to find out what’s happening on her watch.

    • We know what happened Annie. A shit stirring fruitcake of a Pom turned up and unfortunately some people behaved completely unacceptably. Some of those people were trans, some were bible bashing idiot followers of Brian T.What does the current Minister of Police have to do with this story?

  9. Clearly demonstrates how weak and ineffective Sepuloni and Davis are.
    They’re not doing their jobs.
The ministerial line up in Labour is weak and has been for 6 years.

  10. Enforce the law during work hours only? The raids seem intimately coupled to the psyche of pacific peoples and probably with good reason, 30% of NZ overstayers are from Tonga and Samoa (NZ Herald, n.d.). Interestingly Chinese people made up more than half of 700 deportations since 2019 despite being only 10% of overstayers. That to me seems like a nationality bias though there might be other factors for elevated levels of said raiding such as the state going through another one of their anti-oriental phases.

  11. Both of these are party leaders so should be looked on as the bast of the bunch .Their slack control of their ministry should give you the reason for the latest poor polling result.

  12. Are those earrings really traditional? I thought sharks teeth were most often worn for decoration but perhaps by men. But perhaps in these gender-diverse times such narrow, limiting ideas no longer would apply?

  13. Government members, like like Local Body members, seem to have become neutered by the will of government and council staff who may even be actively working against their ministers. This is not the first time MBIE have failed.

  14. Ken Douglas,t bone steak in his hand , WALKING MANNERS MALL, WAINING IT ABOUT JOIN. THE UNION YOU CAN HAVE ONE OF THESE, WHAT A knowing truth. Ey! Knox, words, socialist trade union.
