I despise The Spinoff, their alienating woke middle class bullshit is one of the main reasons the Left are losing.
Put aside the false rape allegations against Labour, the $6m in taxpayer funded social engineering and that appalling coverage of Posie Parker, this column on why ACT have become a double digit political phenomena is surely this is their worst piece of journalism ever because it utterly ignores the truth of ACTs rise, which has been built off the back of The Spinoff’s woke middle class bullshit!
ACT started climbing as the woke began their free speech war. The woke middle class activists ALONGSIDE The Spinoff have given ACT the political ammunition and I know this, because I’ve been warning they risked waking the dormant political fault line that is ACT for the last 5 years!
The moment the woke started their free speech cancel culture, ACT started rising in the polls to the point they are now the third largest party!
ACT are now the right wing values party and they risk causing enormous damage if they get anywhere near power!
Toby’s absolute denial in understanding the role his own media and his woke middle class activists mates have played in empowering ACT is just staggering.

Let me be as clear as I can be to my fellow comrades of the Left, if we allow woke activists and woke politicians to drag us into a culture war, we on the left will lose the election!

Social media algorithms have allowed for a toxicity of debate that is easily manipulated. A symphony of sweaty truths all screaming for attention and no one listening. Woke Identity Politics activists have seized the joy of having no gatekeepers to express how much they hate white men while alt right Incel Nazi’s have seized upon the joy of having no gatekeepers to express how much they hate everyone else.
Millennial woke culture sees macro violence coming from micro aggressions and piously police those micro aggressions with virtue signalling purity mantras.
Alt Right Incel Nazis see white persecution and create some bullshit replacement narrative to justify their powerlessness and feed that resentment online.
Most people are on social media and most people have a woke activist or Qanon fanatic in their social media feed screaming their feverish truths. While these activists certainly think they are speaking truth to power by endlessly calling people out for breaches of woke mantra or fake news anti Trump lies, to everyone else they are simply toxic.
People stop seeing the political party and only see the activist and in the end proxification means the activist becomes the proxy representation of the Party, and seeing as people have negative feelings towards the proxy, they turn from the Party.
Voters aren’t voting on policy, they are voting on who made them feel resentful on social media!
The political is the personal now means what hurts me personally becomes political.
Before social media activists could only face each other off at protests or through letters to the editor or talkback radio. There were constraints of interaction but with social media there are none and it turns out the freedom to insult and dehumanise others is more addictive than nicotine, alcohol and meth combined.
Wokeness has become a puritanical religion with none of the beauty – it’s not so much the personal virtue signal, we are all dicks at times, it’s the weaponization by algorithms that make it so dangerous and damaging.
The danger of identity politics is that it locks people intellectually into only defining the world through their skin colour, genitalia or sexual orientation – it also becomes toxically subjective and tribal where the only solidarity is with other people who share the skin colour or genitalia or sexual orientation- without shared truths and values, the 1% and their 9% enablers continue to divide the rest of us 90%.
The Left has lurched into woke ‘Social Justice’ territory which alienates more than it attracts.
Twitter outrage is woke righteousness porn for the middle classes. A puritanical razoring where the self elected morality police publicly shame and cancel anyone for not using the language protocols of the conclave.
Media proxification is leading to a fascist kaleidoscope of climate crisis entropy triggered by Covid, woke supremacy & ok Karen QAnon echo chambers.
This is why ACT are polling in double digits!
The woke activists have driven people who should be voting Left into the arms of the hard Right!
I’m really excited to see how The Spinoff manage to get ACT to 17% on Election night.
Comrades – Your enemy isn’t a woman who says stupid shit about Trans people in a public park, your enemy are the Banks, Oil Companies, Billionaires and Property Speculators who continue to pillage this country while we are bickering over the narcissism of petty difference!

Are Spinoff grasping at straws in order to stay afloat? Making a raft like the Kon-Tiki of last century when we were interested in Planet Earth. Is this a straw man they are erecting to either cover the fact that they don’t care who wins and regard the election as a media event for stand-up comedians, or considering that only humour will encourage alienated young people to take a real interest in politics enough to study and think about them, and try to use their vote, and use it wisely?
That all sounds a bit ironic , rather hopeful. Humorous, risible, you be the judge!
Nobody reads these rubbish publications. It won’t be hard to expose them — there isn’t a single serious broadsheet paper left (unless you’re getting The Guardian or The Australian air-mailed). As soon as someone starts one, they’ll wipe the floor (and cause the other papers to go into hysterics).
Broadcast news is no different. The bar is so low: even Sky News often looks amateurish, and most talk radio isn’t serious at all.
If the trade unions restarted the labour movement press, it would change everything. Even if they composed the entire newspaper from wire reprints, and hired some undergrad student from Oxford to read out the same stories on air — this ultra-low budget operation would still be superior to all the rest!
Greywarbler Agree % re humour in election coverage. We need objective factual reporting, not funny stuff which can divert and mightn’t be all that funny, even if it provides material for ego- tripping scribes’ future books which they invariably hope will make them famous and important like politicians.
Don’t think they don’t care who wins. The Spinoff’s report, 25/3/23, about the occurrence at Albert Park was from cloud cuckoo land, jolly misleading, and towing the government line about that shameful event orchestrated to deny women a public platform by any what means.
If the Spin-off want to be clowns, then they can run for Parliament and join the circus up Bowen Street.

Yes No Comment. Labour rather good at making ACT look like a well oiled machine. No doubt that dancing with the Stars appearance is worth 3 %. Labour need to get silly Willy or grunting Grant on dancing with the Stars. Hipkins would not be up to it.
I read the article and true, it ignores the push-back to woke that has helped Act. Still, it’s an interesting insight into how ACT has gone from joke to credible contender.
I think ACT remains a joke despite becoming an alleged credible contender. That excitable little fellow Seymour strikes me as a shallow chancer.
