The middle class woke are beside themselves with fury that their hate speech laws won’t be passed, because many had revenge fantasies of using the new powers to attack anyone who may have argued with them on social media.
Indeed it was their desire for vengeance that convinced the Labour Leadership that our activists couldn’t be trusted with these new powers.
We haver all been saved from this religious hate speech as Alan Ringwood points out in his column: Religious beliefs must be open to scrutiny and, sometimes, to ridicule.
I completely agree with him.
Here was the baseline proposal for what would be considered religious hate speech using what was put up previously by the Government…
‘the incitement of disharmony against religion, based on an intent to stir up, maintain or normalise hatred, through threatening, abusive or insulting communications’.
Remember, the new religious hate speech law would have specifically targeted ‘hate’ towards religious beliefs, but many religious beliefs are ridiculous. Under this law, ‘The Life of Brian’ would be considered hate speech…
From the archive, 30 August 1979: Nothing funny about Life of Brian’s Jesus joke
The Catholic archdiocese has called Life of Brian a “blasphemy”, adding that it was a “crime against religion which holds the person of Christ up to comic ridicule.”
The Jewish groups are equally damning. They regard the film as “grieviously insultlng,” and have described it as “a vicious attack on Judaism and the Bible, and a cruel mockery of Christian religious feelings as well.”
…I philosophically hate religion for many, many, many fucking good reasons, but because NZ is a liberal progressive democracy, I tolerate religion.
I tolerate Scientology, I tolerate the Exclusive Brethren & I tolerate those who believe in a magical invisible flying wizard for all their personal choices!
I also tolerate that they don’t pay tax – BUT I SURE AS FUCK refuse point blank to fear them!
This is a liberal progressive SECULAR Democracy, if you want to believe in crazy myths and crazy invisible magical flying beings, that is your total right to, but equally, it’s my right to mock those beliefs when they collide with my individual rights.
Blasphemy laws and gender identity hate speech isn’t a solution to a cascade intelligence failure by the entire NZ Intelligence agencies that led to a white supremacists terror attack.
Any Religious Hate Speech Law must be so defined and narrow that it can’t be used by religious fear grifters attempting to use the law for their own promotion and legitimacy.
It also can not include mockery because fuck it, religions should be mocked and if mockery is included you get perverse outcomes like the Life of Brian being banned.
Labour must pass something because it has wasted an enormous amount of political capital on this, but it must be so limited that it can’t cause mutations elsewhere. So the law should be as basic as:
‘You can not incite violence against others based on their Religion’.
This would be a simple thing to pass and would make a very clear demarcation line between offensive criticism and threatening criticism.
Likewise the issues regarding gender, disability and sexual orientation –
‘You can not incite violence against others based on their gender, disability or sexual orientation’.
It is currently illegal to threaten or harass people in NZ, we should be putting more resource and Policing muscle to enforce the current laws on harassment and threats than open the floodgates on what is and isn’t hate speech.
If the woke middle class identity politics activists have finished fucking the Left over with their micro aggression policing triggers as social policy, can we please bury this hate speech bullshit and start focusing on policy that will actually make a material difference in peoples lives rather than alienating voters by criminalising the misuse of pronouns?
Can the Woke please go back to sleep?
Please, until after the election.
Cheers.

That’s the thing isn’t it, Labour IS the woke bureaucratic or PMC class.
The law hasn’t been binned and like a bunch of the current Chip flops, will be right back after the election if they get back in.
Gerald Mann. Hush. Hate is a dirty word. Read the Koran – it’s a beautiful read, even in English, and has the same essential message as that of all the great would religions. Behave yourself if you’re worried about moralising, peel an onion if you want to have a bit of a cry, and you should be just fine.
( Eat the onion too, it’s better for you than you may know.)
You forgot:
“You cannot incite violence towards others and use religious dogmas as justification.”
Both the Bible and Quran are hate manuals.
I did not realise you could philosophically hate anything that much, but you must have your reasons. I agree that free speech protects democracy, and should be equal for everybody. So Israel Falau should be equally free to express his beliefs, even if he is a celebrity. Would his views still be called hate speech ?
Who said Israel Falau is not free to express his views? The people employing him at the time just told him to go and do it somewhere else, because they didn’t want their brand tarnished by his stupid opinion.
For going through convolutions in knowing how to address someone who is in a sensitive sexual/gender state you might like to refer to this RadioNZ item. We have to find some new pronouns that are official and don’t denigrate new or old and settled genders. And put the proposals to the public to see if they are bearable.

To quote the teacher of a future Pope, Pierre Abelard
“The key to wisdom is this — constant and frequent questioning … for by doubting we are led to question and by questioning we arrive at the truth.”
