Lack of discipline in young people behind rising gang numbers, rehabilitation leader says
A gang rehabilitation leader believes a lack of discipline in young people is leading to a rise in the number of people joining gangs.
It comes as figures revealed to Newshub show gang numbers have increased by more than 50 percent in the past five years. The number of 18 to 25-year-olds joining gangs has jumped significantly, from 514 to 898 in the same five-year period – a 75 percent increase.
NZ is a funny place.
As a people we seem incapable of holding two ideas in our minds at once.
Take the ram raiding youth and the explosion in gang numbers.
Apparently this is happening in a completely different dimension from the rest of us.
Apparently the highest inflation rates in 30 years and exploding costs of food and cost of living have nothing to do with this.
Apparently the under funded welfare services that in some cases abuse the children they are supposed to care about have nothing to do with this.
Apparently the housing crisis, the inequality, the poverty – none of that has anything to do with this.
John Key’s legacy of throwing this kids out of state houses, living in cars, having their parents incarcerated in the private prison industry has nothing to do with this.
The post covid economy faltering has nothing to do with this.
The pressures that are causing quiet quitting, that are causing the great resignation, that are causing higher levels of mental anguish, that are seeing house prices deflate, that are seeing everyone else under stress.
That are seeing an explosion of abuse online, domestic violence through the roof and food banks being robbed.
But apparently not the most abused kids who turn on a system that doesn’t give a fuck about them, no they are responsible for everything in a special dimension which we have created where all the stress and pressures that are twisting everyone else in damaged ways has no role to play in their actions.
Oh no, for them we must have new police laws and powers and draconian responses.
For them we must be vengeful and allow all the pressure and stresses of the world explode down upon them.
We are all damaged and we are all struggling, we need to recognise that before demanding punishment.
I don’t think ew are anywhere near that place culturally, socially or politically.

And yet the majority aren’t committing brazen crimes.
Stealing a car and slamming it into a building to steal cigarettes is a crime of thrills, not poverty. They might be pissed off by poverty but that’s no fucking excuse.
If you are writing on this blog then I doubt if you are damaged or struggling as much as thsee kids . Hopefully you had parents that cared enough to be sober or drug free to send you to school and taught you right from wrong with love not a big stick or belt buckle.. These young outlaws are there product of poor parents and a state that allows them to remain under their control of these parents. The state needed to remove these children from a toxic environment and put them in well resourced care and wrap around resources to show them their is a life worth living and a society that cares .
If we could put the effort into turning these children’s lives around as we did fighting covid we would all benefit. as a society
It was the state that created the foundation of the toxic environment that destroyed their parents.
People can be broken.
Without the cycle being broken Trevor we will continue for these events to happen. Not one service has created the answer, so alas this continues. When you are subject to an abusive psychological upbringing the end result is what we are witnessing. Blaming government for not being tougher on these crimes are not the answer. Somehow, somewhere the answer is at the top of the cliff.
Perhaps the answer is smarter not tougher. I am sure people like you would be able to contribute a lot if asked but the problem is those setting the solutions seem to think the answers are in a text book or worked out on a computer

the fact that they use cars as weapons
the fact that they endanger themselves and others
the fact that in the near future either one of them gets killed or one of their victims.
so you can do nothing, you can pretend they are all poor sob story victims, and you can watch them in being the ganglords of tomorrow.

Maybe we should ban tiktok. that is where a lot of their inspiration comes from, that is where they upload their videos – and make no mistake they will film what they do and upload it.
But then in true NZ fashion, no one will do anything. and if this guys show up in the system as adult we will give them home d for murder or aggravated assault or something like it, because the poor dears were failed by their parents, their grandparents, their iwi, their whanau, their marae, their kindergarten, their school, the state, the teachers, the doctors, their communities, their friends, their lovers, their dogs and their cats and even the pukekos failed them.
IF you don’t want the public to start policing their own communities, government must put on the government hat and finally start fucking governing, or else they can just resign and and fuck off as far away as can be.
The general public should police their own neighborhoods. If you see something suspicious happening, report it. If you see/here domestic violence, call 111. Dangerous driving, report it. Drug dealing, report it. Loud music, call noise control. If you tolerate bad behavior & crime, you condone it, you accept it.
If you see dumped trash, clean it up or use the Snap, Send, Solve app to report it to your local council so they can take care of it. Graffiti, dumped trolleys, vandalism etc, do the same. Water leaks or infrastructure issues, report them & get them sorted. Make your community one you want to live in.
Get to know your neighbors & if there is a need & you are able, help them. Get to know your representatives, councilors & MPs and let them know what you want & expect from them.You are not powerless and you can make a difference. Build stronger, safer, more connected communities that don’t tolerate trash, crime & neglect.

The ‘trickle down’ policy of government just throwing money around at third parties who don’t seem to be doing a good job and in fact much of their advice seems to be sustaining further abuse and crime. Time government got serious, get rid of the right wingers and woke, and get some experts who are not political with race theory or neoliberals, and take it in house to turn it around.
The doctor/former chief scientist who worked out the fake meth levels is a good start – qualified and with the right perspective on trying to protect youth while not making money and politics out of it.

And we have brutal violent murderers getting only 11 years when it was made mandatory back in 2003 that murderers serve 10 years. There are huge inconsistencies in how sentences are being handed down and it depends on who you are, what colour you are, your race/ethnicity and your, standing in a community.
