Hundreds tell new wrongful conviction body that they’re innocent

The Criminal Cases Review Commission was established a year ago to investigate claims of wrongful conviction. But, as Mike White discovers, it has received nearly double the number of cases it expected, and is struggling to keep up with demand.

Based on overseas examples, the CCRC estimated it would receive about 125 applications a year from people saying they were wrongfully convicted, and had exhausted all their appeals in the courts.

The previous system for examining these cases, which the CCRC was replacing, was the royal prerogative of mercy. It was overseen by the Justice Ministry and had received 172 applications in the 25 years from 1995-2020. In the last two years of its operation, it received just two applications.

When the CCRC opened its doors, it received 25 applications in the first two weeks, and 61 in its first two months. Within eight months, it had received more applications than the royal prerogative of mercy system did in a quarter of a century.

And by the end of June 2021, a year into its operation, it had received 220 applications, far beyond anyone’s predictions.

Whether it’s pre-censoring a movie none of them had seen, to manufacturing a threat from Rachel Stewart to get the Police to harass her, to ghoulishly gloating who the woke will lynch the moment they gain hate speech powers to the Greens gerrymandering the sexual assault laws to ensure anyone accused of sexual assault is found guilty, the ‘progressives’ sure love to punish.

The thing that has genuinely surprised me over the last few months is the bloodlust from so many of my comrades on the Left to throw people in prison for the most spurious of reasons – I can’t tell the difference between half of you and the Sensible Sentencing Lynch mob!

When due process is considered heteronormative white cis male privilege and the evidential threshold is whatever someone says on social media, woke justice prefers that 9 innocent men go to prison rather than let one guilty man walk free because you know, ‘patriarchy’.

That so many prisoners are desperately grasping for this Criminal Cases Review Commission should be a warning sign to the woke that their social media mob lynchings, thirst for hate speech purges and gerrymandering law to ensure guilt might in fact be creating a maelstrom of the very injustice they claim to be championing.

I say should be a warning sign to the woke but we can all see by the spittle of anticipation dripping from their fangs that their lust for Hate Speech laws is driven not by justice but revenge.

Drop a drip of power onto your average Middle Class Identity Politics Spinoff/Stuff subscriber and they mutate into a thousand Tiny Hitler’s, a phalanx of little sisters whose eyes gleam with the same Dogma Cult of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

I fear the innocent languishing in prison are about to be joined by a lot more thanks to woke justice.
