Media demand Israel explain destruction of news offices

NEW YORK (AP) — News organizations demanded an explanation Saturday for an Israeli airstrike that targeted and destroyed a Gaza City building housing the offices of The Associated Press, broadcaster Al-Jazeera and other media outlets.

AP journalists and other tenants were safely evacuated from the 12-story al-Jalaa tower after the Israeli military warned of an imminent strike. Three heavy missiles hit the building within the hour, disrupting coverage of the ongoing conflict between militant group Hamas and Israel. At least 145 people in Gaza and eight in Israel have been killed since the fighting erupted on Monday night.

…it’s not much of a confidence boost when you are targeting foreign media.

It doesn’t suggest things are going swimmingly when you are desperately trying to hide what you are doing from critical media.

I’m fearful that a toxic mix of influences have contributed to this latest explosion of violence.

A Prime Minister drenched in allegations of corruption with a long history of using division to hold onto power mixed with oppressed Palestinian Youth identifying with Black Lives Matter mixed with far Right Israelis sparking local neighbourhood riots mixed with American apathy has combusted.

More Violence can’t solve this.

There has to be an immediate ceasefire and an immediate summit to dramatically lift the quality of life for Palestinians while asserting saftey for the Israeli population.

There is no military solution here.

  1. The building in question was an intelligence centre for the terrorist Hamas group, and therefore a legitimate target. Reputable journalists should not capitulate to violent jihadists.

    • That’s rich use your eyes and ears and brain who is performing 99.99% of the violence with its Dahiya collective mass punishment? Who invaded the El Aqsa mosque three times with stun grenades and tear gas. Who are driving Palestinians out of their homes in Jerusalem etc etc. etc. Who are dropping 500pound bombs, who are turning Gaza into an unliveable hell hole. WHO ARE THE REAL TERRORISTS???

    • The obvious terrorist is Israehell. Hamas is the democratic elected government of Gaza. Also the media people in that building say that Hamas was not present there and even if they were they would have every right to be there.

  3. Whatever Israel has planned for Gaza, witnesses are not wanted.
    Operation Summer Rains June 2006: 416 Palestinians killed (around 100 children).
    On July 20, Paul Hunt, the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur claimed that the Israeli attacks on Gaza constitute a violation of international humanitarian law, and called for an independent inquiry into war crimes in Gaza by Israel
    Operation “Autumn Clouds” 1 November 2006: Fifty-three Palestinians were killed.
    On that occasion Israel refused to cooperate with the UN Human Rights Council and obstructed any international investigation into the matter. A Human Rights Council mandated mission which was to have been led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was refused to enter Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. On 11 November the United States vetoed a Security Council draft resolution calling for the establishment of a fact-finding mission into the events of 8 November in Beit Hanoun.
    A UN report, written by the Special Rapporteur, concluded that ″it seems clear that the indiscriminate firing of shells into a civilian neighbourhood with no apparent military objective constituted a war crime

    The 2008 Israel–Hamas ceasefire was an Egyptian-brokered six-month Tahdia (an Arabic term for a lull) “for the Gaza area”, which went into effect between Hamas and Israel on 19 June 2008. Hamas honoured it and offered an extension:

    On 4 November 2008 Israel broke the ceasefire with an attack on Gaza (presumed to have been a provocation to invite rockets) followed by Operation Cast Lead: Human Rights organizations and the UN counted just above 1,400 Palestinian deaths, 926 unarmed civilians, 288 children and 103 women. The usual “Human Shields” calumny was trotted out to excuse the civilian death toll but Amnesty International’s investigation of these claims found no evidence that Hamas or any other Palestinian militant group had ‘directed the movement of civilians to shield military objectives from attacks.’ It did find that Israeli soldiers had deployed Palestinian civilians and children to shield themselves.

  4. The Jewish resistance in Nazi era ghettos and towns were brave heroes for putting up a fight against their oppressors (you know, using rockets), against overwhelming odds. How can the actions of the Palestinians be regarded as any different?
