Housing, Cannabis, Public Broadcasting – Labour are cowards when it comes to market reform

Labour are big cowards when it comes to actually regulate the neoliberal fee market paradigm.

Time and time and time again we see Labour fail to regulate the free market.

We have broken media market, Labour refuse to regulate…

We have a market failure in Public Broadcasting and we need to think of a TVNZ-RNZ merger as the spine of our public broadcasting body alongside a NZ on Air targeted journalism fund to ensure plurality of voice while also educating the public on fake news.

We have a broken housing market, Labour refuse to regulate…

the intergenerational wealth transfer that happened over the last 30 years so dominates our political and economic landscape that the savviest and most pragmatic politicians know it cannot be turned around. They just hope the young haven’t worked it out, don’t notice, and don’t try to really shift the political centre of gravity.

…and the less said about Labour’s refusal to regulate cannabis the better.

Labour are the Government who unleashed the neoliberal experiment upon us, and ever since, have been too intellectually frightened to ever wake the sleeping dogs of the free market debate ever again, as such there is no intellectual appetite for transformative change of the neoliberal state beyond smiling and waving.

Right now there are 22,000 desperate Kiwi’s waiting on social housing lists – don’t tell me party pill testing for middle class kids at expensive summer festivals is a fucking priority especially when working class cannabis smokers get nothing!

  1. and the sad thing is, if ever there was a time and opportunity to make real and meaningful progress – this is/was it.
While I don’t want to minimise to good stuff in getting us through a pandemic, a volcano and a terrorist attack – the things that might pop up at any time, dealing with the bits that are going to matter and preventing us from lurching between one crisis (or emergency) and the next …… too hard an ask apparently.

Mightn’t be a bad idea if JA took a few months leave for a wedding and honeymoon even if it meant putting a not-so-charismatic colleague in charge

Many in Labour should be ashamed of themselves. I’m past supporting something that only aspires to being the best of bad options.

  2. I guess there are a couple of questions in that.

If things hadn’t gone “so swimming well” since April, and now 20,000 NZders (or pick whatever number you like) were dead, and a lot more people were discovering the “Kindness” of WINZ staff, and the numbers were so great that Princess Ardern couldn’t protect them with even a ten-tier benefit system, what would we be able to do differently, immediately?

What would’ve happened if Landlords still could not raise rents or kick people out, by law, and the fire-sale property boom still hadn’t happened, and the bungled wage subsidy simply couldn’t be continued, as an end to the spread could not yet be predicted?

If labour make the National Party obsolete by being National circa 1975 instead of Labour 2020, and as a result the Greens become the new foil to the madness and move yet further to the centre, but not as close as Labour once were, and to counter that, ACT move towards the center, but not as close as National were, what then? Are we still heading in the same direction, in the same way, but slower?

Where and when exactly do people start making a change without asking for permission first, or checking to see if their friends are following? Or are they too busy complaining that the free money dropped from a helicopter in Auckland recently wasn’t real money and that they were genuinely duped. How do they pass of their greed, stupidity, and violence toward their fellow citizens? When does that change? What words can anyone whisper in their ears that’ll make an impression?

At some point, it has to begin, and it’s now certain to not begin from the top, or in an organised fashion. Everyone from your Gran to the most expensive psychotherapist you can find will tell you to set goals and plan out your life to reach your dreams, but what if that was all just a load of shit?

What can the below average person do, with no Bastille to storm, no or almost no spare money, or any sort future as they had heard it might be – if they were lucky – now gone? What would you do for the sake of a better country for the people around you, if money wasn’t the meaning of life and if it couldn’t save you, raise your social status or be used as a weapon, or secure your future? What would you do, if middle class dreams weren’t possible, because there was no middle class? What would you do today, to build a better country for people, if the only certainty for you was poverty, and death?

    • Derreck Jensen* was the first person I know of to highlight the take-the-easiest-path psychology of the Jews of 1930s Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe.

      “Wear an arm band.”

“Okay, I’ll wear an arm band if that keeps me out of trouble.”

      “Walk in the gutter.”

Okay, I’ll walk in the gutter if that keeps me out of trouble.”

“Move out of your house and into that house.”

“Okay, I’ll move out of my house and into that house if that keeps me out of trouble.”

      “Get into that cattle wagon.”

“Okay, I’ll get into that cattle wagon if that keeps me out of trouble.”

“Get undressed and take a ‘shower’.”

“Okay, Ill get undressed and take a shower.”

It was the tiny minority who did not comply with instruction that who had a much higher survival rate, albeit very low. More significantly, most of the Jewish leadership within communities were in favour of compliance because the Nazis could really be THAT bad. After all, Germany was the home of Beethoven, Marx, Schopenhauer….

NZ has never been noted for high educational standards -though there have been a few notable exceptions: schools with excellent facilities and low pupil-to-teacher ratios cost money. And everything in NZ, including education, is done ‘on the cheap’. A deliberate policy of dumbing-down was implemented in the 1980s, whereby ‘everyone passes’, and academic standards fade.

Couple that dismal scenario with severe dumbing-down of the media, continuous pandering to short-term business interests, along with continuous propaganda, whilst the shops are flooded with cheap Asian-made goods and it’s easy to see why there is no rioting in the streets.

Despite all the cries of “children without shoes”, people are not suffering enough yet.

Give it another year or two, when the financial crisis, the energy crisis, and the environmental crisis have all been made WORSE by the government, and we might see some serious rebellion.

Never forget that a lot of people have to die before a revolution is successful in toppling any almost any regime. And the current one has all the latest technology to suppress revolt.

What the current regime doesn’t have, and cannot generate, are an increasing energy supply and a livable environment.

In the meantime, the money-printing will continue, eating onto the energy supply and wrecking the environment a bit more. And devaluing money already in the system.

      * Derrick Jensen (born December 19, 1960) is an American author, ecophilosopher, radical environmentalist, and anti-civilization advocate.[1][2] According to Democracy Now!, Jensen “has been called the poet-philosopher of the ecological movement.”[3]

As well as presenting a love letter to the natural world, Jensen’s writing critiques the effects and concept of civilization, exploring what he describes as its inherent values, hidden premises, and modern links to supremacism, oppression, and genocide, as well as to corporate, domestic, and worldwide ecological abuse.[4] He has consistently called for the guerrilla destruction of civilization and of Western culture, which he views as inherently unsustainable and as an inevitable cause of ecocide.[2]

      • Apologies.

It was the tiny minority who did not comply with instruction that had a much higher survival rate, albeit very low. 3. Jacinda Adern is a confidence trickster and an empty vessel of the highest order, and she has managed to fool an awful lot of people over and over again for four years.

The fact is, ‘Labour’ and National are two faces of exactly the same coin, and have been since the traitorous mid-80s faux Labour government.

Both parties adhere tenaciously to failed economic policies, failed social policies, failed energy policies and failed environmental policies, and both ensure that everything that matters is made rapidly worse.

The only real difference between Labour and National is the number and size of the ‘breadcrumbs’ that fall off the ‘elites’ (how I hate that word since they are scumbags) table.

As the financial system progresses towards complete collapse in the post-peak-oil world undergoing Abrupt Climate Change (Meltdown) that we now live in, expect the lies that come from Jacinda and ‘her team’ to get bigger, and for the quality of life in NZ to fall even faster than it has over recent decades. National are similarly ‘off the planet’, but with a meaner streak.

I won’t say: “Wake the fuck up, people!” because the people are unreachable and are content with the baubles the consumer society provides them with.

Orwell and Huxley were SO RIGHT, so prescient, all those decades ago.

Ignorance IS strength. Freedom IS slavery. War IS peace.

And anyone who tries to disrupt the distribution of the ‘soma’ will incur the wrath of the masses.

So all we can do is be aware that as far as politicians are concerned, it’s all bullshit, and prepared for the meltdown.

  4. No surprises. An accurate analysis which only feeds more right wing policy. Labour is bau which has failed. Just like the Dems in the US.

  5. The MSM is a (market) failure. RNZ has deteriorated and joining with TVNZ is a sick joke. RNZ has joined with Stuff, which is a cop out. Our Public Broadcasting is becoming irrelevant to youth anyway. Sad.
