Blueprint for new Foreign Affairs Minister

We didn’t have any focus on Foreign Affairs during the election but with a new Minister there is a chance to reset NZ foreign policy and confront some of the big issues.

  • Combating Chinese influence in the Pacific: I think two ways NZ could uniquely promote its interests into the Pacific against China could be via Rugby Diplomacy and Journalism. The All Blacks doing a tour of the South Pacific would actually be of huge cultural and sporting importance and something the Government should sponsor with taxpayer dollars to help subsidise the costs to the All Blacks as a sign of respect to the sporting and cultural contribution Pacific Island nations have provided NZ. Why shouldn’t we use Rugby as a diplomatic tool to build standing throughout the Pacific? It’s something China couldn’t match and something NZ could excel at. Likewise Journalism. AUT run the excellent Pacific Media Centre to promote quality Journalism throughout the Pacific. What if NZ saw the promotion of quality Journalism as a craft throughout the Pacific as a strong way to counter corruption and Chinese influence? Scholarships, Pacific News Media websites, support of local ethical journalism these could be the pillars of promoting corruption free politics and holding those Governments to account. Rugby diplomacy and promotion of Journalistic standards throughout the Pacific could counter China and promote NZs strategic interests. We can’t outspend China, but we can play a far smarter game.

  • The reality of Climate Change: Northland was hit by a 1 in 500 year storm, Auckland is in drought conditions, Siberia is on fire and Antartica is warming more rapidly than believed possible. None of this is even being discussed with the required urgency. Auckland is the largest Pacific Island City and we do little to celebrate or leverage off that. We need to look at offering fundamental migration opportunities for Tuvalu, Tokelau and Kiribati who face the worst impacts of climate change

  • Continued ill treatment of New Zealander’s in Australian custody: New Zealanders continue to be treated like second class citizens in Australia and are still renditioned and forcibly deported to NZ. With the ever looming environmental heatwave that will burn life from Australia, NZ needs to be focused on preventing Australians from swamping us as they begin to flee their furnace blasted future.

For a country that bitches about being left off every world map, we will do very little to actually debate foreign affairs policy this election.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice going into this pandemic and 2020 election – please donate here.

If you can’t contribute but want to help, please always feel free to share our blogs on social media.

  1. Agree with most, but believe NZ has to strengthen up our immigration laws like OZ, in terms of how sustainable is it that anybody in the world can come to NZ on the back of a dodgy job, degree or marriage, then bring in the rest of the family, and then suddenly get’s voting rights and income support (within 2 years), free health and education… then super after 10 years in NZ, no need to pay taxes in NZ, obviously to get the multimillions in benefits off the back of NZ taxpayers who are now increasingly in poverty.

Then the corporate welfare and plundering of our natural resources to private companies

    • When Biden reactivates the TPPA then our resources and environmental concerns may well cease to have NZ sovereignty with a power to make decisions. US Coporates will sue if profit opportunities are denied.

Our public health system could be at risk.

  2. China’s diplomacy in the Pacific has a financial tag as it lends money and resources requested by Pacific players.

Blaming China is nonsense. US, the IMF, World bank and other banks all lend money so whats the deal. China also provides technical expertise with many socially aimed projects.

Australia at the behest of the USA, has joined in with the demand of an inquiry on Covid19.
The USA has dropped membership with the WHO and the inquiry is aimed at China and stacked that way.
China has refused to take part with such a fiasco but is very compliant with WHO investigations,
Covid19 virus has been detected in other countries with dates well before the “Wuhan” outbreak.
Australia will pay for its obedience to US demands. China is not blind and perhaps Ozzies will blame China for its trade restriction of imported Ozzie goods rather than look at the cause. Murdoch has Ozzies by the balls.

So far NZ has publicly ignored the US pressure to rail against China.
More power to Kiwis and their leadership so far.

    • Andrew I think it will take a lot more than Biden’s past shady deals to influence China. China has its own plans where the direction is laid out regularly by central planning. Private Corporations have little to do with planning.
