As TDB has pointed out from the beginning, China lied about this pandemic.

Every time I’ve blogged on this, I am beset with furious claims of racism and xenophobia towards China, despite being equally critical of America.

Well, turns out TDB was right…

That delay from January 14 to January 20 was neither the first mistake made by Chinese officials at all levels in confronting the outbreak, nor the longest lag, as governments around the world have dragged their feet for weeks and even months in addressing the virus.

But the delay by the first country to face the new coronavirus came at a critical time – the beginning of the outbreak.

…point blank refusing to challenge China on its response, a response that could have saved the rest of us from exposure of a pandemic that originated in their country, seems delusional and so pro-globalisation that those woke activists screaming xenophobia now have to justify their criticism.

Why shouldn’t China be challenged on their unregulated wet markets?

Why shouldn’t China be challenged on their cultural practise of eating all mammals?

Why shouldn’t China be challenged on their lack of truth?

Why shouldn’t the WHO and China relationship be questioned?

Why shouldn’t the use of Uyghurs in plague factories be challenged?

How is it that woke identity activists screaming racist at any criticism of China are given such a free ride intellectually?

In light of new accusations from the Washington Post that a lab studying this very disease didn’t have proper safety standards, it’s time to demand answers, not just ask them.

  1. Isn’t it strange that the two super cities of Shanghai and Beijing have remained pretty much immune from Covid 19, yet reside inside the country of origin, yet the entire rest of the world hasn’t?

          We all know most NZ officials will bend and scrape as their customary style for the last decade to China but will Trump and Boris and the EU leaders be so grovelling and let hundreds of thousands of bodies fly under their radar?

          Theres a lot of dead people around the world and more still to come from the aftermath, is anybody going to pay for it or allow those that contributed to the disaster intentionally or unintentionally, profit from the disaster instead?

          • The price for borrowing growth from future generations is being payed for in blood. We’ve put away inadequate amounts of PPE so we didn’t future proof at all. We have a very small window to spend an absurd amount of money to flatten the curve. But we must spend an equally absurd amount keeping it down for good. People go on about GDP and trade and sanctions which are all tools of the twentieth century.

            We require twenty first century tools, tools that levarge cheap modern printers, digital to garment printers (DGP), 3D printers, and vat grown minerals and chemicals essential to the cocktail of modern civisation.

            New Zealand’s manufacturing is an industrial wastland. We need to cut the crap and stop trying to sound like a corona experts, start making something and being useful for once in our miserable neoliberal world and make stuff happening.

        • I am at home isolated where I should be. We should all be fully aware and we should emphasis this again and again and again – we who are able to isolate ourselves are the privileged ones. Just think of all the electricity, the trash, the water, how many pharmacies need to be open, how many doctors, who brings the food?

          Just think of all the things that need to happen in order for us to remain safely isolated. So I get furious when people say level 4 lock down is bad for us or the economy. What makes me even more furious is we who are isolated is a minority.

          There is the isolation apartheid opening up where essential workers are asked to take all the risks so that we can live in isolation. The issue is how can we trust the data, any data, even data from official sources. Even New Zealand with its very low infection rate doesn’t even test that widely and the U.S with over 20,000 deaths the highest in the world has gone past every one in terms of testing. This is why we need Julian Assange more than ever. It’s so transparent that every government is manipulating the situation by saying everything is under control.

          My fear isn’t lefties freaking out because they don’t have access to nuclear weapons. My fear is the people in power are freaking out because they really don’t have control. Okay so I believe Jacinda is in control because the numbers are on her side but no one can deny that Trump is freaking the fuck out and who else should be freaking out? Well the entire New Zealand Foreign ministry should be freaking the fuck out and that should bring out there A1 gold plated A game.

          And if you look at it New Zealand is now the Sth. Pac (South Pacific) republic. If you listen to Parliament Live Facebook streams of the corona response they’re all protecting there own people, no! We must do everything in our powers to expand the privilege of isolation into the Sth. Pac islands and then we can ease restrictions on ourselves and that’s the most disgusting thing that for weeks the message was don’t panic because of xenophobic phobic behaviour and the powerful was already panicking. The rich countries take care of the rich and the poor countries should have saved for a rainy day and well that’s not how you fight a global pandemic, sir.

          That’s the most digesting thing about those who respond with calls of racism and xenophobia they have no idea what that is. When the rule of law breaks down everybody understands because rioting happens. We had the toilet paper crises where everybody ignored official advice. I believe that panic is already happening amongst the powerful and we just need to bring our a game and focus on getting the death rate down and forcing it down across the whole of Sth. Pac.

          Want a reason to borrow an absurd amount of money so that New Zealand leverages every suburb with road, rail, ports and electrification so New Zealand fits seamlessly into The South Pacific blocks well here’s your chance plebs. And that will make the powerful people listen to Jacinda.

  2. Christ even Helen Clark was on the blower yesterday insulating Beijing from criticism. Clark needs to be honest and explain her motivations and goals for doing so or she needs to be very, very quiet.

    What Iv been saying for awhile now, years, is that the tools of the 20th century can not fix the problems of the 21st century. It’s like every politician just learnt what to about the Wuhan virus by copying their favourite old political speak and one liners.

    There’s some good people in the government. It’s not true Labour/NZFirst/Greens have a shallow talent pool we just have to promote people like Willie Jackson, Kiri Tapu, Marja Lubeck, Chloe and Derrick Ball and inject some freshness.

        • What is the point of worrying about employment figures, if around 40 – 60% of people employed in NZ are now poorer than beneficiaries?

          Asking the wrong questions… NZ needs to aim to get employers paying for their workers not the taxpayers propping up their low wages, cos that did not work before Covid and GFC…

          Apparently we are so short staffed in NZ we need 200,000+ temp workers coming in every year, pretty easy to solve unemployment in NZ as we don’t need temp workers anymore now we have no jobs! And guess what, seems to free up the houses and the roads too not having the xtra hundreds of thousands of new residents in NZ!

          Bye, bye billions for roads and turn it into creating real jobs for citizens of NZ, get rid of the fake degrees for foreign students and return to real degrees for domestic students!

          When work is now defined as 1 hour per week, who are we kidding?

          The problems have been brewing for years now and getting worse and worse, partly because people have become so brainwashed here on jobs, jobs, jobs – if the job pays less than the dole and the DPB with all the taxpayer wage top ups and benefits added to the ‘job’ who are we kidding!

          • Quite simply New Zealand requires a new thing, that makes all the things.

            What I mean by that is we don’t have adequate PPE, training and auditing to put kiwi workers back into the field. We could produce enough things that make the things of we had manufacturing capabilities of our own. So we just need to be honest because will we need a financial system reorganize around kiwi values and a little less corporate values.

  4. China arrested the doctors who first sounded the alarms! They should be internationally disciplined for both human rights abuses and wrecking everyone’s economy.

    Wuhan virus was not the first virus coming from China. They had Sars and others which are linked to ‘wet’ markets and often black market trade in wild animals. The world did not learn a lesson last time and now we are all paying for it.

    WHO were late in calling the pandemic apparently because they were that they were frightened of offending China, and thus having cosy meetings with President Xi Jinping during the crisis when it was downplayed initially.

    AKA this link shows on 28 January WHO was having meetings with President Xi Jinping and downplaying the pandemic while at the same time, link number 2 shows China was stockpiling billions of PPE from other countries which is very dishonest when they are down playing the disease to other nationals and WHO concurrently.

    This calls into question of how independent organisations like WHO are.

    The problem is, that many countries wait for the ‘pandemic’ signal from WHO that was left too late and thus countries were unprepared and many more deaths can occur.

    Once the pandemic signal hit, it turns out that medical equipment and supplies were being sent back to China from countries like Australia and stockpiled.

Apparently people are shamed who stockpiled PPE like hand sanitisers and toilet paper, but China stockpiled massive amounts of the world’s PPE without any international and media consequences and now appear to be profiting and manipulating other countries to get the PPE China bought up before the crisis that started in their own country.

    Maybe the media should stop harrassing the toilet paper people and start looking at why the world’s nurses are wearing rubbish bags and how much they are paying for PPE from China that was donated to China from the rest of the world, from pro Chinese companies operating from other countries around the world.

Any form of relationship based on a power imbalance requires a lot of trust & with human nature being what it is (selfish) there is always a risk that those with the power will decide that other events take priority over any agreements with you.

  16. This would not surprise me but then New Zealand’s consistent under reporting of unemployment over the years, for example, does not surprise me either. And if anyone is naive enough to think its only the Chinese who will get creative as this thing progresses, well what can I say.

    Indeed there, is and will be more under reporting across the globe as badly funded health systems are unable to keep pace and people become fearful of visiting hospitals unable to cope. There will also be people dying from other ailments because again they are afraid to visit over stretched healthcare services.

    So what does reporting mean in practice? I’m not excusing deception but the reality is stats mean little when you consider the larger implications of this pandemic.

    • No, the virus was already present in bats. We don’t have to construct a delivery system because the regulations around selling bats gaurenteed that bat diseases would jump the species barrier.       So in january the atomic clock was moved past 11:59 so now we count the likeliness of a nuclear exchange in seconds and there analysts just the other day moved to clock even closer.

      These analysts demand as we do that more needs to be done to even out the global response to the Wuhan virus. New Zealand has done the best followed by ASEAN and China and Taiwan are under control. While the most powerful state in the world the United States is doing the worst job because they’ve got a bunch of functional retards in Washington and I don’t want to even think about what the poorest contrives are going through but they’re doing it tough because America, the leader of the free world is struggling it just can’t do anything.

      U.S intelligence in January was trying to warn Trump say look, there’s a serious problem, it’s a pandemic but they couldn’t get through to Trump because the information was making him give up any sort of coherent thought. At the same time Trump was exporting to China which included masks and respirators in an effort to address the trade balance and it wasn’t until March when Trump recognised what was going on and that’s when Trump began freaking the fuck out.

      The U.S is the only country in the world that can’t even provide data to the World Health Organisation because the real death toll is just to embarrassing. What’s even more embarrassing is Cuba is sending thousands of doctors and nurses around the world to help coordinate the destruction of corona. For many years Cuba has been treated as the enemy and well there it is, the enemy of the free world and the enemy of free men is The United States of America.

    But when you work out that the companies exporting products are increasingly owned by overseas companies in particular Chinese and Australian companies that are increasingly importing in overseas workers that the NZ taxpayers support and all the increased profiteering going on from banks and supermarkets and the rise in Meth and social harm… NZ is being sold a croc!

    Then work out all the social and environmental harm like Meth, PSA bacteria, Covid, Milk scandals, Mainzeal, the free water given away during droughts, the fake degrees, our increasingly dysfunctional society with constant crisis for workers and residents … and what is in store for us when the next Chinese scandal hits…

  20. I come to this blog late because anti-China sentiment seems to be stopping us from thinking clearly about the ‘Life of Virus’ story. Bomber’s evidence is not conclusive. Geoff Lye’s comment I have read elsewhere in media and probably holds water.

    With the move away from level 4, we should be looking to China to see how they are coping. We followed them into lockdown. Shouldn’t we be following them out of it? WE followed the right trend, are we now going against the right trend? How accurate is our testing in finding potential cases/hot spots? Is my uncertainty about the right path shared by you, TDB actors?

    In the meantime, anything Chinese is rubbished by lots of punters. Not helpful. Positive comment here like Cushla and Reason point us to reality.
