This weekend (26/27 May), two disparate voices called for a more egalitarian society in our country. The voices of Children’s Commissioner, Judge Andrew Becroft, and Chief Executive of the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern), Kim Campbell, both made statements on TV3’s The Nation and TVNZ’s Q+A (respectively), that only a few years ago would have been heresy to neo-liberal orthodoxy.
At the invitation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela’s Foreign Affairs Ministry I had the opportunity to represent the CFMEU WA branch to witness the historic Presidential elections on Sunday 20th May.
When will the senior leadership of WINZ, who inculcated a toxic culture of blame and shame at all levels of the organisation on behalf of the previous National government, be required to resign?
This is a public service that does the public a disservice. they have been so run down and underfunded they are a toothless watchdog that has become a lapdog to those they are supposed to guard against.

As Kiwis, we like to think of these issues as ‘far away’ or not our problem to own. However, the truth is many New Zealand consumers purchase imported clothing and are therefore contributing to this problem without realising it. Rather than remaining naive, we propose that Kiwis become more accountable for their actions.
Donald Trump is a narcissist. While I don’t think he has actually killed anyone (there are plenty of stories about the big T but I haven’t heard any about dead bodies in concrete boots at the bottom of the Hudson River), he lives life on a dangerous edge of immense sensitivity to criticism and a retaliatory instinct. His disregard for other people, his lack of empathy, the feeling that he is the only actor who counts on his own stage, all demonstrate his deeply narcissistic streak. Someone once noted he was personally unfit to be President, and that indeed is true.
I trust the government is getting good advice on this proposal because the worry is that when it comes to choice of rail mode to the airport, it clearly doesn’t have good advice at all. Opting for widely criticised light rail (trams) instead of heavy rail (trains) to the airport is a very high-risk call; one taken on dubious technical advice and without a business case.
It also out of line with international best practice.
Modern life has most of us over a barrel. An oil barrel. The price of oil is a fundamental force in shaping our quality of life and how much take home pay is left for other needs and wants. This has all hit home in the last few weeks as the price of fuel at the petrol pump has reached its highest ever.
