What happened at the NBR with Matthew Hooton?

So Matthew Hooton has been dumped from the NBR following one of the best columns he’s ever written giving real insight into the 9 year rule of Steven Joyce

…now say what you like about Hooton, and I have – he’s the Head of Slytherin House, the architect of the Death Star and most hilariously the moral Shepard of the Right – but he’s also the only reason I ever read the NBR.

Dumping him because the newspaper is gutless and won’t stand up to a Politician is astounding and embarrassing for the NBR especially as it happens less than a month after they had to take Bob Jones out the back and shoot him for racism.

Something the NBR escaped real scrutiny over by publishing Bob Jones in the first place.

The Publisher and Owner of the NBR has had this to say about the sacking of Hooton…

…which is interesting because the timeline The Daily Blog understands is this…

THURSDAY

The NBR called Joyce and offered him  right of reply to Joyce before the column was published.

FRIDAY

Newspaper receives threat of legal action if NBR doesn’t retract and apologise for the column.

SATURDAY

Hooton calls the Editor and is then sacked.

…perhaps Todd Scott decided to sack Hooton on Thursday when he offered Joyce a right of reply and just didn’t get around to informing Hooton of his decision until Saturday?

However this happened, it stinks.

Whatever you think of Hooton, as a columnist he has the right to criticise and critique Politicians and as long as he doesn’t defame that Politician by lying about them, then his right to be critical of a Politician is supposed to be sacrosanct and backed 100% by his Publisher and Editor.

In this case it seems that the Newspaper has failed their columnist, their readers for being spineless and ultimately their role as a member of the Fourth Estate.

    • Joyce is a “corrupted crook”

Hooten had exposed him at Radio Live on 31st August 2014 in front of “radio live with Mark Sainsbury” as he blew Joyce’s cover in front of Mishelle Boag, Mike Williams, Mark Sainsbury and many listeners across the couintry then as I heard it while sitting at the beach in Gisborne.

If Bridged doesnt get rid of Joyce joyce will frame him eventually andn also ruin Natiojnal’s chances of winning in 2020, ‘consider yourself warned Simon.’

      Listen here.

‘Explosive’ is one of those words that gets kicked around in politics and political reporting to the point where it’s almost lost its meaning.
But it’s not an exaggeration to describe right wing spin doctor and self-declared National Party loyalist Matthew Hooton‘s performance on RadioLIVE this morning as incendiary. He effectively called Prime Minister John Key ‘dishonest’, said the PM’s office and chief of staff Wayne Eagleson is implicated in the Dirty Tricks scandal (viz. the SIS-Goff-OIA affair) and more, described Jason Ede’s black-ops brigade as ‘acting under orders’.
And in a fiery exchange, he described former National Party President (and present-day apologist) Michelle Boag as ‘a hack’ with ‘no political views’ who is ‘all about is defending a government that has behaved in ways that [are] literally indefensible and you know it’ …
      Listen for yourself.

      • Hooten is a right-wing shrill to be sure, but he does have some good points, such as standing up to crooks like John Key and in this case Joyce. I suspect though Hooten’s motives are self-serving, in the case of ridding Joyce that is…

      • And now, like his former master, he quits because he can’t hit the big time anymore. Good bloody riddance!

  1. Yes Joyce is a ‘nasty toxic crook’ that lowers the credibility of Parliament and must be expelled from the political scene forthwith now as he is just a glorified propagandist for big business and global crooks.

    • That Joyce has remained in Parliament this long (stalling Christchurch insurance payouts along the way lets not forget) says a lot about the Key / English government…

      • Yes they have a lot to answer for…re; “says a lot about the Key / English government…”

and Bill English is certainly not a philosopher king as Hooton suggested on Ninetonoon

rather Bill English is the best of a bad bunch of crooks

  2. Have no time for Hooten or NBR. However, regardless of opinion, or political perspective, columnists and media have the right to express views openly, keeping within the law. And in this case, IMO it seems Hooten and NBR have kept well within the boundaries of publication law.

Politicians cannot exempt themselves from publicity or scrutiny through threats of legal action, as is the case with Joyce here. To do so is heading down a very dangerous road.

I have a horrible feeling Joyce might still hold some control over media. Intuition tells me Joyce is hiding far more than the public realise, fearing exposure. Hence the bully boy tactics!

Joyce needs to be scrutinised and hard!

    • A big drop (of historically enlightening material) is coming, Steven Joyce knows it, and he is scurrying away to his rat hole.

  3. Yes , … its always humorous when the enablers of neo liberalism start to turn upon themselves when large scale failure occurs. The infighting, the factionalism,… the war of words escalating into the courtrooms…

I have no sympathy for either party. However , I do see there is room for us to be alarmed because it appears that one faction is threatening this country’s freedom of speech.

Isn’t it well that we had a change of government?

The scenario reminds me of two old songs,… that if you play around with evil ,… you can only expect evil in turn as your reward…

    • Meh, Kiwi blog often has severe allergic reactions to kiwi culture. So much so one wonders if they ever got out of the cave and experienced life. With Steven Joyce’s resignation and the reality of there nine years in government it will only be a matter of time before the next resignation. They crewed up and don’t want to talk about it.

    • Good. But do we really care?

Its like a manic serial sheep killer dog was euthanized.

      So what?

There never was a legacy. Just an 11 billion dollar hole that never existed.

And thousands of people living on the streets, working for less than the legal amount, family’s living in garages etc , etc… the last of the John Key sycophants extracted himself.

Piss off, and don’t ever come back , and bloody good riddance ya bastard.

Next , we need to see Hooton take a dive. And if he truly backs Bridges, that wont be too long in the making.
