Why would you fill in the Census online in a post-Snowden world?

This citizen will be filling out his Census form online

I think this years Census will be an abomination (and a screaming failure).

Not a mean, nasty or malicious abomination mind you.

Just the kind of garden variety fuckwit Wellington Bureaucrat abomination that makes you wish for death.

You can immediately see the fuckwit Wellington Bureaucrat logic here right?

“Why spend all that money sending people out to get census data when we can just get everyone to do it on line’.

Wellington Bureaucrat Fuckwittery at it’s most absurd.

People don’t fill in the census out of civic duty. We filled it in because some annoyingly nice Census person turns up on our doorstep and effectively demands that we do it.

That’s why we have had in the past such strong Census return numbers. There was someone you had to be held accountable to who prodded, pushed, begged and if necessary, threatened to get that data.

It was unique and only happened every 5 years and it had built into a respect for that uniqueness because it’s the only time the Government sends everyone a person door to door to connect and get that information.

This year the fuckwit Wellington Bureaucrats have dumped the unique feature of the information collection to just demand people do it online.

There are a huge amount of problems with this fuckwittery.

In a post Snowden world, why on earth would you trust any online information collection of personal data? We know that all Social Services are connected to each other now, it’s the reason a beneficiary who has had a run in with WINZ won’t go to Housing NZ because while Housing NZ will say, ‘we can’t help you, but by the way, you owe WINZ this’.

This new interconnectivity is the main reason why the poor and needy do everything in their power to hide from social service agencies. Census assures us their information isn’t shared, but with the need to identify yourself with name and number, I believe their assurances are hollow, especially when the GCSB. SIS and Police intelligence can still access this information, not to mention the NSA and the other 5 eye mass surveillance powers.

Let’s also not ignore the digital divide that means the poor have no ability to participate online.

So the drive to make this cheaper means there is no personal contact point to pressure compliance, it opens the data up to being used by more powerful state agents, allows the information to be hacked and leaves the poor out.

Combine this Wellington Bureaucrat Fuckwittery together and you have what I believe will be the worst return data for a Census on record. As the fuckwit Wellington Bureaucrats start to realise few have bothered to fill in the Census, expect a flurry of new advertising warning people they will be fined for not complying.

You tell bureaucrats what to do, you never let them dream up shortcuts.

  1. Coming from a fckn wgtn bureaucrat let me explain the logic Mr Smarty Pants. Instead of having to visit all 2m dwellings in NZ, Stats NZ will only follow up the households who haven’t completed either online or via the paper forms. Pretty simple right, less visits, less cost.

    • This is already a problem, as many archives that were digitized early on are already hard or impossible to read without specialized equipment and programs or expensive consultants to help interpret the data. Hmmph, Say what you will about us and paper copies, they don’t grow obsolete, and they’re considerably more stable than many forms of digital storage.

    • What about every automobile, bridge, shopfront, park, cemetary and Tiny house (on wheels)?

      I’m a smarty pants too.

    • I can’t wait to see how this works out for all the folks living in cars.

To nitpick Bomber’s argument though on the poor: I suspect the vast majority of even very poor people do have a mobile phone of some sort in their immediate family (even if just the one) on (usually) a pre-paid plan. That gives the whole family effective internet access which means they can in theory fill in their online census forms without too much cost or drama.

      • no,because you cannot complete an online form unless you have been sent an access number…which means you need an address…

    • I don’t agree with you Connor our privacy has already been eroded by the gnats I will be filing out forms for this for this very reason.

  2. And the fact rural New Zealand gets screwed with Internet Plans and mobile coverage. I can see a massive flop coming and you having to do it again.

  3. Considering rural New Zealand gets screwed with Internet Plans and mobile coverage. I see a huge flop and it having to be done again.

  4. this is all bullshit and nitwitery from the post modern generation who are stuck inside their i-phones and have no idea of reality. The civil service is slowly giving way to a cohort of fucking ninnies!

  5. l
why dont the whizzkidz at the statisitics department tell us all exactly how much they are going to save and whether it is worth it.

  6. Since the last census the population has gone up by over 500,000
100,000 more than the population of Wellington

    New Zealand Population 2018
    4,735,199
New Zealand’s current population is estimated at just over 4.75 million in 2018. The most recent census was held in 2013, when the total population was counted as 4,242,048.

How many new hospital beds, school chairs, teachers or doctors etc have we seen added to the country.
How did the fking 2013 census help?
Maybe they need to ask the world “Are you intending to immigrate to or from New Zealand in the next 5 years?”
Meanwhile in Kapiti ‘we’ are increasing the caring capacity of our roads by maybe 100% = how many hospital beds is that?
Apart from the population, the only thing that has increased is the amount of bullshit and just out and out lies being spouted by our so called public servants. Oh and CO2. Which has risen 10,000 times faster than ever B4!

    • ‘Apart from the population, the only thing that has increased is the amount of bullshit and just out and out lies being spouted by our so called public servants. Oh and CO2.’

      Daily CO2
      March 4, 2018: 409.97ppm
      March 4, 2017: 407.46 ppm

And 5 years ago it was around 396 ppm at this time of the year.

The ‘plan’ that the fuckwits in Wellington -as per Wellington Bureaucrat Fuckwittery- have is to push it up faster and annihilate life on Earth faster.

  7. As Bomber said-the entire census is an expensive, failed experiment …online data-taking is unworkable until EVERYONE is online…which will never happen-and if it will, not un til about 2030…but you watch the geniuses fine you $300 if you don’t complete your form…

  8. I have heard of some people having requested the hard copy print forms, and they still have not received them, having asked for them to be posted or delivered over a week ago!

So unless the post delivers these tomorrow, they will not be able to send in a paper form, and if they cannot or have reservations to do it online, they will not be registered at all by the census.

It will indeed be a disaster, and we are now becoming the divided society that was predicted, those that have internet and online access and the hardware to use, and those that do not, becoming increasingly excluded from society.

India has its untouchables, we will have our invisible lot.

  9. Maybe I am out of the loop but I am surprised at how little advertising has been directed at this. I think I have seen/heard one ad for it. Maybe that means their targeting is working because I have already filled out my form but I suspect not.

  10. “In a post Snowden world, why on earth would you trust any online information collection of personal data? What, you think all those previous censuses were just bundled up into boxes and put in a warehouse?

How do you think all they analysed and produced all of the results in 2013 and 2006 (and probably 20 years before that)? Spoiler alert : All the previous paper censuses were digitally scanned and shoved into the same databases as this years one will be. Nothing has changed on that front. 2013 census results already provide the backbone of the IDI and are linked to the medical, income, education and criminal records of the people who filled them in.

  11. The gender question is a binary male-female option. Which leaves out the myriad rainbow variations of human gender and sexual orientation.

It is my understanding that Stats NZ hierarchy is still very conservative and according to “someone high up”, “there was no point in counting transgender, intersex, etc, because they are such a tiny minority anyway” .

    I kid you not.

Though how that un-named person has determined that they are a “tiny minority” is unclear – since transgender, intersex, etc, are not being counted!
