Labour poach Vernon Small & Alex Tarrant as Press Secretaries

TAME: A moment ago, you said that you ordered Lt. Kendrick to tell his men that Santiago wasn’t to be touched.

Just as we are seeing examples of the new Government’s teething problems in transitioning from Opposition into Government occur in real time, Bryce Edwards reports a massive win for Labour’s communications team…

…this is a huge power move by Labour.

At a time when their communications strategies are desperately falling apart, picking up two of the heavyweights of the Journalist world is a bloody smart move.

It follows NZ First poaching Jon Johansson as their chief of staff.

While this is a massive gain for the new Government, it’s also a sign that the secret reforms occurring within the mainstream media right now to outsource journalism to Newsroom, Interest.co.nz and even the bloody Spinoff  are all occurring over the holidays. Expect more ground breaking news like Dr Jarrod Gilbert having his car clamped to appear on the front pages of NZ Herald and Stuff.

A dumber media will become a more violent beast with less journalists and more ‘opinion’ leaders like Hosking and Yardley spitting their usual hate for the poor.

The new communications team will have a lot of work to do.

  1. A desperation may be creeping through MSM with Barry Soper now requesting PM Ardern to “drop her guard” for heaven’s sake, and to be as silly as John Key, and tellingly, raising Key’s dopey antics as examples – not Key’s achievements – whatever they were. Soper may think that it’s the PM’s job to entertain journos, but begging for it is pathetic.

  2. Transitional thinking & radical change is required not SPIN (propaganda). This new lot is morphing into another bunch of lightweights who’ll tinker with the business as usual model, & spoon feed us their good news.

  3. Labour must be gearing up for a major propaganda offensive to sell the TPPA (‘CPTPP’) to the masses !

It was deemed by them to be a worthless poisoned chalice that would take our jobs and threaten our sovereignty, IP, Pharmac and environment when they were in opposition, but now that they are in govt we are expected to believe that it is A OK because they say so !

    Sellouts.

    • We do not yet know to what degree the CPTPP differs from the TPPA; it may be a bit premature to be passing judgment on it, or Labour’s embracing of it. Any propaganda exercise might be necessary to counter negativity towards a govt which has held power for just a few weeks, but is being judged like the abject failure failure which it’s predecessor was in so many ways, for many, over many years.

      • You have evidence for this statement?

        Please produce it.

There were never any drafts to approve by anyone.

Tim Groser and John Key presented NZ with a deal that was struck.

No approval was ever sought from anyone , apart from public service mandarins.

  4. Personally I am pleased to see the Government bringing in the artillery to counter act the MSM spin.

Now they need to put new direction into the Public Service as well as the RNZB by appointing Lead positions sympathetic to the coalition aims.

We have an opposition in parliament, we do not need them seeded through government departments.

  5. Is it? Is it a good thing? We are talking about spin doctors ay? I hope NZ isnt getting set up for the next few years for ‘Propaganda Wars?’
    BS flying left,right & centre?

Heavyweights? In who’s underpants? Is there anybody that can steer us into a story or two of theirs that changed the world or should I say little ole backward NZ?

    Cheers

  6. No gearing up for anything ; TPP or what remains a first step. Wait until the greedy get hold of changes to workers rights. I support Labour getting the best in the coms portfolios ; And no-one but no-one has the right to critics journalist who have moved from the ever increasingly privatised Fairfax run journalism who want to do a different job helping Labour and NZ stand up for something different.

  7. Great stuff. Labour are serious after all.
Thanks for the background on Vernon Small. I have always read his stuff online and thought him worth reading and capable of in depth thought. Now I know why.

  8. Vernon Grand Chess Master. I remember him from school as a cheerful teenager, double jointed and suffering migraine. Good luck Vernon, you are one journalist who hasn’t sold out to the Tories over the past nine years. Hoskng for Press Secretary to Nick Smith?. Check mate. .. Lol.

  9. One abject failure of the Labour Party over the last decade is the lack of ability to recognize the power of a heavily-financed National Party spin machine, the near criminal strategy behind it which seemed to have kneecapping the opposition as the single goal, and the way some media could be so easily manipulated into consorting. Anyone who ever handled a media release in the name of Tony Ryall, Opposition National Spokesman on Police of the immediate pre-Key Government era without more than a little skepticism was really letting the whole media team down, and doing a disservice to the nation. The beefing-up of the Labour media team is a long time overdue.

  10. Well, it is overdue that the government presents some comments and leadership, as we have major news like the following, today, but nobody say anything:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11947603

    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/we-shocked-funding-slashed-pasifika-training-provider-prompting-job-loses-and-student-upheaval

    https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/344656/audit-reveals-extent-of-former-dhb-boss-travel-spend

I ask, do we have a government?

I am gobsmacked at the lack of leadership on this kind of stuff, have they decided to go away for the weekend, and do not wish to be disturbed? It is time to front foot issues, and to not stay silent on such serious and even scandalous developments, in NZ and in PNG on Manus Island.

  11. Mmmm main stream media journalists are part of the problem!! Just because someone has a PHd and is a chess master doesn’t mean he sits outside the mainstream bullshit that is peddled all the time. Aren’t they part of the same team?
