Should we accept Mike Hosking’s attempt at voter suppression on Seven Sharp?

Last night, Mike Hosking told the country that you couldn’t vote for the Maori Party if you weren’t on the Maori Roll.

This is 1000% bullshit.

Anyone can vote for the Maori Party, regardless of whether they are on the Maori Roll or the General Roll.

Here is the truth, and the facts about voting if you still aren’t enrolled…

The deadline to be included on the printed electoral roll, which is used in voting places and for sending out EasyVote packs, is Wednesday 23 August.

Anyone enrolled after 23 August will have to cast a special declaration vote.

“You can still enrol right up until the day before election day, including at any advance voting place,” says Ms Wright, “but you’ll need to make a special vote.”

“A special vote takes a bit longer and means filling in an extra form.  That’s why we encourage people to get enrolled now.  We want to make voting as easy as possible for everyone.”

…it is deeply concerning that Mike Hosking seems to have no idea of how our electoral system works and calls into question again why someone with such a faulty general knowledge of elections is hosting the TVNZ debates.

But there’s also another problems with this. A rich white male broadcaster with privilege has effectively tried to suppress a huge chunk of NZ vote by misleading viewers that they can’t vote for the Maori Party.

There is a huge history of rich white people doing all they can to suppress the votes of the poor, some will say it’s just Mike being ignorant, others could argue it was on purpose.

One thing is for certain, we don’t just need a new Government in September, we desperately need a new media as well.

To date, the mainstream media coverage of 2017 election has been woeful – the same voices visiting everyone else’s online panel show isn’t a functioning 4th estate.

  1. Yeah Martyn this is really bad actually disgusting. You see just like NZers trust their doctors they also trust the mainstream media. He should be made to retract what he said tonight. Lets see if he does. I would be very surprised if he does but his type of journalism is appalling.
We need to sort this after the election when we get a change of government. I for one am sick and tired of the poor, divisive and bias journalism we have in our small country. We were warned about rich people having monopolies and how it would effect the standard and credibility of our media.

  2. Just another item off Natz’s list to give people cause not to bother voting! In absolute desperation now, Herr Joyce spitting out the orders to his media blowhard gobshites!

Hosking must be made to publicly apologise tonight! And to think this spin merchant mouthpiece for Natz, has been selected to moderate the election leaders’ debates, despite tens of thousands of petition signatures requesting he is replaced by a more objective moderator!

  3. Strange for someone of his bias to attempt to deprive a possible future National support partner of votes.

Perhaps he’s promoting English’s recommendation for those on the Maori roll to vote for the Maori Party?

A possible strategy to deprive as many Maori seats from Labour? Persuade Maori to enrol on the Maori roll to achieve this end?

Considering the bias of that show and him, it’s difficult to accept that statement as a misunderstanding.

Deeply concerning how state television can broadcast such misinformation. At the very least TVNZ should retract that statement and apologise. Broadcast it on their news bulletin and that show as well as publish it on their website.

Preferably scrap Hosking and that show and replace with an actual current affairs programme.

    Lodge a BSA complaint?

I’ve been watching election debates since I was a kid, but I won’t be watching any this time round. It was disgusting how last election the final debate on TVNZ was a half hour. Along with the chaos with Mediaworks mismanagement since then and the general lack of analysis in television news and current affairs, they have completely lost any credibility.

    • Preferably scrap Hosking and that show and replace with an actual current affairs programme.

What?!?! An actual current affairs show? With real journalists and real facts??

Damn… I wonder what that would look like. Sorry, Andy, it’s been a while since I’ve seen one of those…

      • Have a look at “The Valley” series on stuff. That’s right, Stuff, that Corp-rag. Heavy journalism, and current.

  4. What a greasy, greedy, pro swanky, wanky, yankee doodle psycho-jonky-stien little runt he is.
Imagine waking up to him then finding an empty bottle of embalming fluids ? To find his little mouse feet scratching at the sheets?
You roll over… there’s that sneer under his greasy, insto-tall, high-hair for short arses ?
He looks deep into your eyes… He squeaks ! Eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek, eek…. !
Translated : ” I’m wonderful and big and strong and handsome and brilliant, and rich ’cause greed is good right? and who are you? Let me a guess? A loser. You’re a loser and I’m a winner an’ that an’ Greed is Good.”

    • Agreed. He is too ignorant to call the Party vote by its correct name. Tonight in his attempted ‘clarification’ he called it a List Vote.

As far as I know, a List vote is not a recognised term. Or is it?

By using this term, he clarified nothing for most people. Party vote, for heaven’s sake.

Yes, he has perfected the art..

      • @ IN VINO … there was no apology forthcoming. From what I saw tonight … and believe me it was quite difficult to watch … Hosking was justifying his comments from the previous show, if anything else!

So how is it possible now that Hosking be allowed to moderate the party leaders’ political debates, where no doubt the Maori Party will be expected to front up?

A complaint to the Broadcasting Standards Authority against Hosking, as well as his shameful employers TVNZ, would not go amiss!

  5. I’m confused. Hosking’s interview of Ardern claimed that “I’ve been around politics for 35 years and I know how the system works” This regarding working groups. Well clearly Hosking doesn’t. This Herald interview was about Hosking trying to play the bully role and saying to Ardern “I’ve been around longer than you’ve been alive, what would you know”. Ardern was brilliant stating that if Mike had been around for 35 years then he would know how Ardern works. Brilliant rebuttal and shows just how wrong Hosking can be although not many will ever pull him up on it.

  6. 10 minutes into Seven Sharp, still no apology but lots of talking over his fellow female presenter. That’s 10 minutes of my life i’ll never get back.

  7. And TVNZ thinks this ignorant clod is the best person to chair the TVNZ leader’s debate when he doesn’t even know s..t from clay?
    Ha ha ha!
    What a joke!
Even Paul Henry would be better than that.

    • You know, Mike, that ain’t far from the truth: Henry would be better. I’ve watched him hosting a serious current affairs show (20/20?) some years back.

He was actually quite professional. (He refrained from any sexist remarks – quite a feat!)

  8. The mainstream media and the National party are TERRIFIED and are using every trick in the book to attack a Labour – Green government

Listening to the vitriol against the Greens for standing a candidate in Dunnes seat is nauseating and that the M.O.U is is dead and spells trouble for Lab-grn.

When the left do break through to government i hope they will address the poison that has crept in and been allowed to infect our fourth estate.

If they don’t act the same malicious monster will eat away and help destroy the next proggressive government.

That is why we need the Greens because i can’t see Labour acting in the interests of free non bias news coverage.

  9. Folks there may be no deep seated plan behind Hoskins latest statements, it could be that beneath that smug exterior there is the brain of a gnat unable to believe that he can say or do no wrong. If I believed in god ( Hoskins thinks that he is one) I would say god help us!

  10. TVNZ should be ashamed of using an uneducated clown like Hosking. They must have more intelligent media hosts they could assign to that role, surely? As for Hosking moderating the leader’s debates, that is simply unacceptable.

I bet you you if it was Shane taurima, labour’s candidate, hosting the debates, there would be an uproar!!!!
