I have respect for politicians if they are open and honest about their political views.
Conversely, I disrespect those who deceive and try to be on both sides of the fence at once.
Itโs hard to know what angers me the most about Prime Minister Bill English and Foreign Minister Gerry Brownleeโs behaviour this week.
Is it the craven apology to Israel for co-sponsoring a good UN resolution last year criticising Israelโs settlement building on the West Bank?
Is it the pretense that this wasnโt an apology but just โregrettingโ the โfalloutโ from the resolution – when clearly the resolution aimed to produce the โfalloutโ of extra pressure on Israel to end settlement construction?
Or is it the continuing effort to cover up the apology by refusing to release Bill Englishโs letter to the Israeli PM? The excuse given is that the letterโs release would โprejudice the international relations of the government.โ Translated, that means it would embarrass English and Brownlee.
When challenged directly on Morning Report, Brownlee wouldnโt criticise Israelโs settlement building policy, saying it was a matter for the parties concerned. Why bother to have a foreign policy if everything is just a matter for the parties concerned โ despite, in this case, one having all the power over the other. The theft of Palestinian land is backed by Israelโs huge military machine.
Bill English has a slightly less hardline stance than Brownleeโs, but itโs also cowardly. Apparently โwe stand by those positionsโ [presumably including opposing the settlements]. But donโt ask us to publicise those โpositionsโ or support critical UN resolutions which so far have only โdisrupted our relationship with Israel,โ according to English.
Meanwhile the Israeli media is trumpeting New Zealandโs backdown and apology. Our government has let down the world community and particularly those 13 nations who voted with us for the Security Council resolution last year.

Couldn’t agree more Keith
NZ’s reputation has just suffered another blow
This was Egypt’s resolution, but Sisi was jointly heavied by an incoming Trump and Israel to drop it.
NZ picked it up maybe because McCully was retiring, it was known the US would abstain(Obama’s parting shot to Netenyahu) ,NZ’s chance to speak out.
With McCully out of it, damage control could swing in to action.
Pretty sickening, oh for a truly values based foreign policy.
I have a feeling we were doing Obama’s bidding with the resolution.Freed from the shackles of office he could take one last swing at “chicken shit” Netenyahu and briefly make things difficult for the incoming Trump
It’s not like McCully has ever displayed much moral fortitude (he of the breeding flock lost in a Saudi sandstorm fiasco)
We did the right thing for the wrong reason and then had to eat humble pie to get back in to line
