Spies’ database of secrets about Kiwis ignored basic security rules and standards, report finds

The intelligence agency databases holding some of the most personal information about New Zealanders breached basic standards for protecting those secrets, a new report has found.

An inquiry by the Inspector General of Intelligence and Security found the lack of basic security standards was well-known for years at the NZ Security Intelligence Service.

Even though it was well-known little was done, meaning there was no formal protection for the four databases containing information about those wanting security clearances.

That included personal information such as financial details, medical histories, relationship secrets, substance abuse or even sexual preferences that might emerge during the vetting process for those accessing classified information.

The report from the Inspector General Cheryl Gwyn is the latest in a series of reviews exposing the NZSIS and its partner agency, the Government Security Communications Bureau, as shambolic and operating outside expected standards – and even the law.

The reviews followed the revelation in 2012 that Kim Dotcom and a host of others were illegally spied on, and have led to wholesale change across the intelligence agencies.

…so after caught illegally spying, after being caught being racist, after being caught abusing their power, after being given vast new mass surveillance powers, after having huge increases in budget – after all that, they still can’t keep all this information they now have on us secure in even the most basic ways. 

Will reappointing a toothless watchdog like Cheryl Gwyn to oversee an agency that ignores her make us any safer from a mass surveillance state?

  1. What a sick country we live in. There seems to be little or no democracy. The elites control everything and are not subject to the law that the vast majority of us are. Change the government or New Zealand Is Lost Forever as a caring egalitarian Society

  2. Problem is the ordinary Kiwi does NOT care, they are handing over private user info 24/7 every day, and do not even think about any issues, this is a lost battle, as the idiots have taken over the asylum long ago.

  5. I went to open a bank account the other day, the bankie turned up in her office, with my name and address on a piece of paper, she asked if I was still @ ….. I said yes, but I hadn’t dealt with this bank in 20 years, how did you know where I was living, she waffled it off, and I couldn’t be bothered getting into it, but it did occur to me after I left the bank, that I had cashed a cheque there about 10 years ago, and wrote my name and address on the back of the cheque. So yeah ‘they’ are watching.

  6. It would be interesting to know how many people the secret police have driven to suicide or out of the country.

    The GCSB collects information, the SIS harasses people with it.

    That is what they do.

    They are like the Stasi, just less open, the public less aware – for now.
