Yes the Labour and Greens were there in huge numbers showing the real, authentic and genuine support they have for the rainbow community, but in a week when Bill was on stage shearing sheep, all he had to do was make an appearance at the BGO to show that as PM he can at least tolerate being around the LGBTQ community.
Yes there was all the criticism of him not getting on stage to address the festival, but English isn’t trying to win over any of these voters, he just has to stop National voters leaving National to win 2017.
English needs to inoculate the truth of how hard right a Christian he is when it comes to running for Prime Minister and luckily the Rainbow Community of NZ are wonderfully kind and forgiving of a man who voted against same sex marriage, voted against civil unions, voted against prostitution reform and even once attempted to change the law in NZ to read that only heterosexuals could get married.
Add in his constant and ongoing attempts to prevent women from gaining access to safe and legal abortions, and Bill needed a simple walk through with selfie hashtags to keep his support base mollified and con the liberals from appreciating how religiously conservative he really is about these social issues.
Now, if English had been pelted by sex toys and angrily seen off, the property owning liberal middle classes who are being wilfully blind to National’s Economic Darwinism because they’re benefitting as paper millionaires from the property bubble, would have to take notice.
All Bill English has to do between now and September is keep the property bubble inflated.
Property owning middle class vested interests and their illusion of wealth will do the rest.

You are correct there as the MSM remains the un-official second wing of the National party, and if we cant find a way to get the opposition parties to force their rights to take over their right to half the voters rights to our public media to be3gin to trumpet the call to wake up NZ voters not to accept this criminal enterprise that is robbing any chance of our citizens ever having any future under national we are all doomed.
While I do not think much of Bill English, he did actually play this very smartly.
What does appear very noticeable is the fact, that over the many recent years, politicians from all parties, or at least most parties, have tried to be seen at every social event of whatever social, cultural and ethnic group there is on our city here in Auckland, and of course the rest of the country.
That makes many look very opportunistic, cheap and even “fake”, I feel. So Bill English was rather diplomatic and honest, which I think, many middle class voters, that is property owners, professionals and those “centre” crowd ones, that bother voting, they will like.
Many people are tired of pollies showing their face everywhere, just trying to “appeal” and get votes. We get little in substance in programs and policies, and much opportunistic crowd cheering and grand standing. I’d rather have an honest politician deliver real policy that this country needs, for instance comprehensive state housing for all that need such affordable housing.
Add other policies like trade training, free tertiary education, better health care and the list goes on, and we may get somewhere.

Their vested interests are considered pretty much as being sacrosanct by both Parties.
I completely disagree, him leaving Paula Bennett to speak was a clear indication he didn’t want to be seen as endorsing the event and reflects poorly on him.
