    The Manawatu River is one of the most polluted in the Western world, according to new research.

    The Manawatu tops a new pollution measurement of 300 rivers and streams across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, research by the Cawthron Institute has found.

    Under a system measuring oxygen changes in water, the Manawatu has by far the highest reading, almost twice as much as the next worst. The Manawatu measured 107. Anything over eight is considered indicative of an unhealthy river ecosystem. A measurement of 0–4 is considered healthy.

    Anyone interested to know more about the “Rock Star Economy?”

    It is consumer driven, we are told. Defying gravity, we seem to be pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps and here’s why:

    This is a quote from Statistics New Zealand:

    For the year ended June 2016, the current account deficit was $7.4 billion (2.9 percent of GDP; it was 3.1 percent of GDP for the March 2016 year).

    (That note about GDP at the end suggests that the economy is actually flat, maybe even going backwards).

    In other words our 3.7% growth is actually funded by imported money greater than the insurance payout for Christchurch.

    It is about as real as Trump’s change of heart.

    The sale of part of Kiwibank is actually a governmental cash grab that is the equivalent of an asset sale.

    Check the bottom line: overall New Zealand’s investment returns shrink, the Government gets some money to spend on the groceries and make the current account look a bit better pre-election, and Kiwibank is less able to expand that they would have been if the “sale” money was available to reinvest.

    It’s an asset sale disguised as an asset purchase.
