The news that our Government will only increase our pitiful 750 refugees per year by a mere 250 to 1000 is an insult to their humanity and ours.

It is a gross reminder that this is the National Government – a Party of historical racism, sexism, and homophobia. A Party for the rich, in the interests of the rich, by the rich. To expect from them a sense of obligation to help the worlds refugees in a meaningful way when they can’t even bother housing the 40 000 homeless was always going to be a stretch, and the 250 they are increasing the quota by is pathetic.

We can let in tens of thousands to prop up National’s property bubble, but we can’t really help the most desperate amongst us.

We can spend almost $30million on a bullshit flag vanity project but can’t afford to help refugees.

We can help aim the bombs that drop on these people, but not help those fleeing from our bombs.

Shame on the National Party and shame on us.

  1. Just what Auckland needs another 1000 people living in cars or rough on the street. Or were suggesting these so-called refugees be accommodated before our own citizens whom are very real economic refugees of our fascist government. Sharia or democracy trying real hard to see any difference between em.

  2. To be totally honest, I think the government has had some polling done on this, and what they have decided reflects what they learned, be this from Mr Farrar or whosoever.

I sense much less welcoming attitudes among so many Kiwis these days, that is here in Auckland, when it comes to refugees, particularly if it involves Muslims. Yes, there are still many tolerant people, and those who are happy to receive refugees, same as other, ordinary migrants, but this mostly comes with a “but”.

The MSM reporting on the horrors in the Middle East, the You Tube pictures that were spread by ISIS and supporters of such extremist and ruthless fighter groups, that has shocked many.

Call it conditioning or whatever, I hear and sense, that there is much apprehension among so many out there, in the middle class and also amongst the workers on low wages, even amongst beneficiaries, asking, why shall we take in more refugees, when we cannot even house and employ our own people.

The decades of division, of stirred up mistrust, of enforced competition at all levels within society, that has resulted in exactly what the neoliberal forces and their masters wanted, a rather disunited population, where we have less and less tolerance.

To try and appease those demanding more refugees get accepted, and to also appease those stiffly opposing larger refugee numbers, the government has done what it mostly does, give a tiny wee bit, and just keep on muddling through, changing little.

But really, compared to the intake other developed countries have accepted, except a few like in Eastern Europe, we have a poor record to help refugees and to also integrate them.
