Current Affairs is going back to the future, with the release of a new on line current affairs show called Waatea 5th Estate.
It’s a discussion panel dedicated to giving as wide a range of perspectives as possible on issues affecting New Zealand. The nightly half hour show is a partnership between high profile Māori broadcaster, former MP Willie Jackson and left wing blogger, provocateur Martyn Bomber Bradbury.
Streaming live each night at 07:01 pm the timeslot is a chance for the public to see just what the mainstream channels aren’t telling you before clicking over to the real deal says Bradbury, “People are sick and tired of dumbed down tabloid trash served up as current affairs.”
“TPPA is a classic example of how main stream media silenced hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders by ignoring them.” Adds Bradbury
“Let’s not start with how mainstream totally ignores Māori issues or viewpoints.” Says Willie Jackson.
The pair see the web series broadcast on www.waateanews.com as a back to the future for current affairs.
The high profile political commentators both agree there’s a hunger for the old fashion in-depth, rational critique of serious issues. “These days more and more people are looking on line to get a wider broader critical view of events, unencumbered.” Says Bradbury.
The show will feature key figures from politicians, activists and academics, Māori and non-Māori.
The online world is a familiar place for the pair, Bradbury is Editor of popular blog site The Daily Blog with over 300k views a month. While Jackson is associated with www.waateanews.com the Award winning national Māori news service.
Waatea 5th Estate starts 22nd February.

The fascists and ideologues have spent decades stamping out informed debate in NZ, and will not be at all happy.
Finally, we are getting the needed counter balance in reporting and discussion, to the defacto right wing, neoliberally soaked, superficial, infotainment style, commercially dominated trash reporting that most of our television, radio and print (incl. online MSM) now offer us.
Good on you guys, I am looking forward to the launch.
Democracy may see a chance for a revival in Aotearoa New Zealand, at long last.
We will be all ready for the launch. Roll on 7:01 pm Feb 24.
Getting the truth out there at last. Something the establishment and its propaganda mechanism msm won’t like at all. No sir!
A few sleepless night are in store for the deceitful, lying tow-rags governing us! Great 🙂
Hopefully http://www.waateanews.com ‘s internet infrastructure is up to what will surely be a massive increase in current bandwidth requirements. Or will you be using YouTube’s live streaming services? If it’s an in-house system, it might be susceptible to the GCSB (or other govt acronym) doing a DDOS style attack on it to make the site unusable for live streaming (adjusts tinfoil hat).
Oh laughs. Just remembering the days of picture math. You know that thing we had to solve before commenting on TDB. No spam bot could survive
Yet here you are ;-).
Just in time as today 70 Editorial jobs go to overseas at Fairfax (to an ominious named “Pagemasters” company in some unknown place) probably a nerve centre in US Corporate world so Martyn couldn’t have planned the beginning of a Media we should appropriately call ” The peoples voice”.
Yes the control. freaks at the “Corporate control media HQ” will hate this free peoples voice that will say what we all feel needs to be heard finally.
Our NGO a long standing public affairs group Established in 2002 would want to also present our issues on this media please Martyn when you can arrange it please.

Another 70 editorial jobs are to go at Fairfax Media in New Zealand as the company outsources some of its production.
Fairfax is moving subediting work for its Australian mastheads to Pagemasters.
“Today we briefed the approximately 70 full-time equivalent staff in New Zealand that would be affected by a proposal to move editorial production work they perform for Australian metro mastheads to a third-party provider, Pagemasters, which would operate from both New Zealand and Australia,” a Fairfax Media spokesperson said.
The proposed new arrangements would provide Fairfax additional flexibility and savings, the spokesperson said.
Looks like this post could use your editorial services, Bomber.
Ready and waiting…
Will it have chromecast capability?
Then the whole whanau can watch on t.v instead of just on a phone screen.
The high profile political commentators both agree there’s a hunger for the old fashion in-depth, rational critique of serious issues.
Thank-you, thankyou Willie Jackson and Martyn Bradbury. I still occasionally tune in to TV1 and TV2 news and their off-siders ‘Seven Sharp’ and ‘Story’ just to remind myself how appalling and stupifying our MSM channels have become.
Btw, you will need to do some public advertising so that potential watchers are aware of your existence.
Agree Anne,
Martyn needs to be known as our Kiwi hero as he has never left his station when things got ugly as a true hero would do.
A asset to NZ he is.
It’s a wonder the Brown Shirts haven’t thrown him in jail!!!
Keep up the good work!!!
Proof of the media outlets deliberately covering for this government. While numerous injustices are still being inflicted on the citizens of the Christchurch region, there is little or no recognition by the NZ media.
Yet the foreign media are continually doing stories on the plight of the city – http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-02-16/christchurch-quake-lives-destroyed-drawn-out-insurance-claims/7169702
Like Key the local media are also “smiling assassins.”
“cocks” would be a better description?
I hope a podcast will be made available, for those not able to watch it live.
Perhaps this news will highlight our clean green imagine in a truer light:

What our crystal clear rivers and streams?
Happy launch day! All the best to Waatea 5th Estate and everyone involved with it.
+100
Hi. Will the broadcast be available to watch later and where please?
7:27
Yeah !! Fantastic. Thank you so much.
Kiaora !
Good to see an alternative to Old Media. Great work everybody involved!
Why is a pakeha giving commentary when there are plenty of left wing Maori perfectly capable of doing the job
Very good, I watched the first live stream with Willie and you, Martyn. This is what we need, and more of it. What is a worry though is the fact, that only a small section of the population will know of this program and will have watched it today.
The MSM still dominates and continues the dumbing down of public thinking, so there are even less and less people seriously interested in political issues of the day, and the bulk are still uninformed, yes, maybe will not even be interested.
We must continue spreading info, and we must continue hammering the MSM for their appalling job in not doing much reporting, certainly not doing investigative journalism.
So I will continue watching this Waatea 5th Estate when I can, keep it up, it is what many of us have been hungering for.
