Someone give this bloke a toke

Sigh.

The madness of our cannabis laws look sadder and more pathetic by the day don’t they? Between 2007-2013, 890 NZers have been imprisoned for possession of cannabis and a bewildering 737 NZers have been imprisoned for possession of a cannabis pipe.

Let’s look at those numbers again…

PUNISHING DRUG USE
How New Zealand has treated minor drug offenders over six years:
CANNABIS POSSESSION

Charges: 17,931
Convicted: 13,131
Imprisoned: 890

Maximum penalty: 3 months in prison and/or a $500 fine

CANNABIS UTENSIL
(SUCH AS A PIPE)

Charges: 11,057
Convicted: 7,563
Imprisoned: 737

…so many NZers needlessly sent through the judicial system for possession of cannabis and or possession of a bong. Look at the misery these laws have created.

In Colorado where cannabis is now legal and taxed, they are looking at a $125million windfall in taxation for 2015

…and that’s on top of spending less policing it, less arresting people for to and less spent on incarceration. It’s a win, win, win situation.

For those still clinging to some sort of public health idea, turns out cannabis is 114x less damaging than booze…

Research published in the journal Scientific Reports calculated down the risk of death associated with common substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and other recreational drugs. According to the study, alcohol is the deadliest substance of all, followed by heroin, cocaine, tobacco, ecstasy, and meth. All the way at the bottom of the list is cannabis, which is about 114 times less deadly than alcohol, according to the findings.

…it’s just painful that we can’t legalise cannabis and even more painful that we have to put up with the nonsense that prohibition is about our health when this government rams through Parliament legislation to allow the pubs to stay open 72 hours for the Rugby World Cup.

We are a nation of full blown drunks with all the political maturity of a can of coke. It is booze and tobacco we need to re-regulate in a meaningful way if health concerns are the issue and cannabis needs to be regulated if we want to stop being hypocrites. The day when politicians dump this stupid law and stop the Police from arresting and convicting law abiding NZers will be a sweet, sweet day.

  1. ..its a case of opinions getting in the way of intelligence and established money getting in the way of common sense.

  2. It’s a shame big pharma & big Alcohol companies are so intimidated they have to spend heaps sponsoring helicopter raids ect, also companies like serco may also worry about lost profits – its pathetic , I wish I could enjoy a joint with my pizza without some paranoid git telling others how to live

  3. Alcohol subdues the masses. It gives them solace from the tyranny under which they live and it assuages their anxiety.
Cannabis threatens our Master’s comfortable status quo by causing outbreaks of thinky-thinky things and we all know what happens when we thinky-think too much ?

We come to realisations upon which we must act accordingly.

I’ve always thought it odd that booze, in its many guises , is in plain sight of any child ?

    • It’s a result of booze being ingrained in human society for 10,000’s of years, whereas cannabis is a fairly new kid on the block. I think with the direction that we are heading in, in the next 100 years cannabis will be treated the same as alcohol, or even more favorably given the enormous negative effects alcohol has on society.

      • Where did you get the idea that humans have been consuming alcohol far longer than humans have been consuming cannabis?

The consumption habits of most ancient indigenous peoples across the planet were contaminated by alcohol consumption as a result of European invasions forcing it upon them, and most still view alcohol as the curse that destroyed their culture, and their lifestyles.

Ancient populations have an unbroken relationship with psychoactive plants stretching back many many thousands of years.
It is generally accepted that ancient cave paintings are representations of plant based psychedelic experiences, which suggests that even in ancient Europe, psychoactive plants played a much more prominent role in human society prior to the widespread use of alcohol.

Europeans have been Christian piss-heads for only a small fraction of the time that humans been engaged in psychedelic shamanism.

  4. Are there any countries/states that legalised cannabis and lived to regret it? How much more evidence that “the war on drugs” is complete and utter waste of time and money? Why isn’t this issue part of the fucking flag referendum?

  5. Sane and intelligent people are aware that marijuana is not a so called
” gateway drug “. The lies and biased and untrue MISINFORMATION of this precious and healing herb have been spewed out for a very long time and it is now time we finally know the facts and face the truths. Alcohol is mega ! ! times more damaging and harmful but yet NZ politicians can see fit to allow young people to have access. Disgraceful. Get informed and stop believing the biased Farrar polls and other polls and Stuff and The Herald.

  6. Will be interesting to see how this effects cannabis consumption in the long run, and the impact, if any, it has on our society.

I suspect that since the enforcement/punishments have for the most part not been very severe in the past few decades the legal deterrent has long stopped being effective, so the legalization won’t have a massive impact.

  7. plus if you decriminalise you can monitor people who are having problems coz you won’t be thrown into jail for owning equipment. I’m a minority coz I believe in the license and tax the crap out it model, ie shop only with limited amounts with drug councillors on site. actually can we get drug councillor in bars and down main streets on Fridays and Saturdays

  8. I think it’s high time our parliament took a good long look at the figures. We know they don’t care about our health but here money talks; hands up everyone who’d prefer to pay tax on weed than on alcohol and tobacco.

  9. Re the image ? ” Someone give this bloke a toke ” Someone should also give him a few drops of ‘ Clear Eyes ‘ .

And to recap . Weed’s not about weed per se . It’s about control. It’s about selling authoritarianism and an insidious fear of the state . It’s a chess game and they’re trying to keep as many moves ahead of us as possible .
( The reason? Could it be they want our country. All we 4.3 million Kiwis have after all is our beautiful country. )
It has nothing at all to do with Weed’s dangers versus benefits and to continue to discuss and debate that would be something ‘ They ‘ would welcome . Bog it all down in minutiae, heap pointless arguments on top of equally pointless rebuttals.

The real problem here is our authority figures who tell us what to do when in reality and in a democracy it’s we who should be calling the shots . Not some old muppet with silly hair and a bow tie shouting I’m a crap fuck.

Smart people would be engaging the police who, like it or not are only trying their best to uphold the laws of the status quo. And who is the status quo ? Currently, not you and I that’s for sure . It’s a few rich people pulling strings.
If we, the people , took back our government then the police would act accordingly. Hugs AND drugs !

The real , actual , bona fide agenda for us should be to make the muppets obey the hand .

  10. Take a leaf out of Colorado,s book, make money for the health system financed bye weed, everyone benefits!! What our country really needs is Totally new leadership with big hairy nuts!! We are neck deep in Americas war on the poor thanks to their brought and paid for puppet Key, wake the fuk up NZ, its do as we say not do as we do, the reference to Orwellian doctrine is an extremely correct one.Big brother is watching you, recording you, controlling you. Time to fight back use the vote, if that doesn’t work, time for the bullet and the rope, our ancestors knew how to fix despotism
