The New Zealander of the Year Awards are on, nominations can be made here.

This Year The Daily Blog is suggesting readers send nominations through for the following 3 NZers.

Nicky Hager – The courage Nicky showed by speaking truth to power in his book Dirty Politics did more journalism in one publication than the entire mainstream media managed in one year. The gutter tactics used against him to punish him for his courage should be a national shame, the smears, the denigration and the raid of his home by Police using questionable tactics demand some type of recognition from decent NZers. Honouring him with a nomination while he is in Court fighting for journalistic rights would do that.

Jane Kelsey – Few have managed to tell the country of the dangers hidden within the ‘free trade’ deal of the TPPA like Professor Jane Kelsey. She has shown enormous bravery standing up as an academic at a time when academics feel gagged from telling the truth, without her strength and intelligence, NZ would almost certainly have blindly signed off on this as an issue long ago. NZ is made a better place by thinkers with a voice like hers.

John Campbell –  He has stood up for us for 10 years and his axing from TV3 for politically motivated reasons is one of the worst hate crimes against public broadcasting ever perpetrated since Paul Holmes haircut. John has done more than any other TV Journalist to speak for those without voice and demand real answers from those in power. The manner in which he was shafted was disgraceful – nominating him as NZer of the Year would make Julie Christie and Mark Weldon cry.

  1. It would be of great assistance if you could supply readers with details demanded by nomination form, such as nominee DOB addresses email etc.

The form will not take nominations without these and some are hard to track down..

  2. Yep, a combined Kiwis of the year award, with Campbell, Hager and Kelsey at the top of the nominations list. These three have done more for NZ in the past ten years, than any politician, public servant or government has done collectively!

Campbell, Hager, Kelsey – good, decent, loyal Kiwis, to be proud of.

I received a nomination form online to complete, but it’s too complicated with far too many personal details required for the nominee, which simply are not available for the ordinary Kiwi to give.

  3. I’ll be nominating Donghua Liu. Why?
    * He represents the new face of New Zealand, a successful immigrant.
    * He’s a successful entrepreneur, a wealth creator (just like our Prime Minister)
    * He’s got a bach at Pauanui – how kiwi is that!
    * He’s made friends with Maurice Williamson – should win on that point alone
    * He hasn’t insulated himself in the business world but got stuck into NZ politics and made a big contribution (in fact, more than one contribution)
    * He’ll shell out big dosh for a good bottle of plonk – sweet as
    * He might have blotted his copy book with assault charges on two women but in mitigation probably no worse a couple of ex-All Blacks

Yes, he’s had a big impact on NZ and I’m pretty sure that David Cunliffe will back me on that one.

  4. I’ve always wanted to nominate John Minto for one of these awards also.

John Campbell has been well paid to do what he does..John Minto does a bloody fine job as a teacher as well as standing up on a daily basis to fight for the underdog – I don’t know how he does it !
