There never was going to be a surplus. It was marketed to the electorate during the election campaign with National’s usual stock of lies, distorted statistics and dreamland fantasies. The majority sleepy hobbits bought it, the rest of us with a bit more savvy knew it was a load of shite and now it has been proven to be so. It reminds me of how Muldoon used to slate the Third Labour Government’s economic policy as “borrow and hope”. Well the Key government’s policy could well be summed up as “borrow and hopeless”.
