Unkind wags such as myself would suggest that if the above were a real representation of National, it would look more like this…

National know they have the rural mob and the angry provincial vote locked in, with their rowing TV advert they are aiming at Gen Xers.

The Eminem soundtrack is a deliberate pitch at 30-45 year olds living in the cities who are being ignored by everyone else as they hit their stride career and investment wise.

The strategy for National is simple.

1 in 2 sleepy hobbits believe National are better economic stewards than Labour despite National borrowing $10billion for tax cuts and tens of billions more for services higher taxation should cover, all the while selling assets and subsidising Dairy and Casinos. Expect to hear nothing but complex economic jargon to start sprouting from the mouths of National and their proxies as they attempt to explain why your pockets aren’t really as empty as you think they are.
Problem for National is that you don’t need a phd in economics to know that you are going backwards each week.

  1. I think 30 year olds and maybe a bit older are actually Generation Y.

Original babyboomers – born around 1945- 1955 – music Beatles etc
Second generation of babyboomers – born around 1956-1966 – music Bowie
Generation X – Born around 1967-1977 – listened to Dance Exponents
    Generation Y – 1978-1987 – Listened to House music
Generation Zero – 1988 – 1998 – Listening to whatever is going on now.

It is interesting that some say that the beginning of each new cultural period starts in the middle of the decade, not at the beginning of it. For instance, 1955-1965 (beginning of rock and roll) 1966-1975 (beginning of High Rock) 1976-1986 (beginning of Punk) etc

    • Yeh – you’re right mid 60’s to late 70’s is Gen X but come on – Dance Exponents, lol? Probably better new romantic, flying nun, etc -but the Eminem track would also appeal to the Hip Old Things and is still a pretty catchy track.
A good sum up was my Gen Zero daughter pointing out that it looks (+ sounds) like a Nutragrain ad.

  2. Someone pointed out today how ironic it is that no one rowing in the boat can see where they are going.
Has a good parallel with the financial situation this incompetent administration is putting us in and the intelligence of the low information National Party voters.

  3. Well… All hard working rowers are going backwards so that the one steering the boat can move effortlessly forward. All in a well (or whale) oiled mechanism. This is a perfect National advert; big problem for progressive is that most NZers won’t see the true meaning of the add.
