On Russel Norman and the Internet Party

The insinuation that some type of ‘deal’ has been cut between Kim Dotcom and Russel Norman is nothing more than that. Insinuation. I haven’t been inside the Internet Party Tent since December, but I know when ideas were  discussed.

The idea to collapse the Internet Party if it hadn’t reached 5% by the ballot printing was always the plan. I don’t think people appreciate how much Kim loathes Key and Kim didn’t want to launch a political vehicle that wasted any votes or accidentally helped Key stay in power.

Every Opposition Party would all want to question the prosecution of KDC because the Government case has been such an abortion of justice, that’s something the right want to ignore in their  rush to accuse Norman. How quick pundits like David Farrar and John Armstrong forget that much of this arrest was illegal and that the manner in which our Intelligence Agencies have spinelessly caved into Washington is the real issue here.

In terms of the leaks, I think either a disgruntled former employee of KDC is leaking to Whaleoil, or the GCSB is collecting information for the PMs office.  I think the former is more likely. That said, Christ only knows how Key knew about Winston. Lord John Key has many spies. Many spies have many eyes.

I don’t think that what KDC can offer the party prepared to pick up his policy platform if he doesn’t hit 5% is money – it’s much more powerful than that.  He offers that party votes from a subsection of the apathetic voter base who are utterly immune to their current communication strategies. In an election that will be as close as 2014, that matters.

Key’s need to attack KDC now is driven by the looming $6m damages case Kim is about to take against the Government.  That and the pending Snowden revelations will be the real battle. This current noise is merely a distraction.

  1. This makes sense and lines up with what I’ve read from the Greens and KDC himself. And, this blog on this topic is far far more accurate Martyn than what Bryce Edwards presents in the Herald today. I am concerned that Edwards is function to further National’s agenda as he usually appears to summarize only right-wing misconceptions about issues such as this. This is journalistic bias to me and I am concerned that an academic (Edwards) is performing such a role right now when there is an election coming up.

  2. Thanks Bomber, you’re comments help clarify a situation as I think there should be no hassle Russell Norman seeing Dot Kid…..The Greens had already said they fight extradition proceedings, so no deal was needed. Also I believe such a vote would hurt the opposition vote, rather than the government support

I am concerned to watch TV3 Firstline today, when following an interview with Michael Wilson and Russell; Patrick Gower in his political chat with Sacha McNeil, used the term ;brain-fade’ over who instigated the meeting in the first place….Gower aligned this to same as John Key and Banks…EASILY FIXED..If Russell can clarify in The House.

Metiria Turei has just fought off the slugging of her attire by being open and I hope Russell will do the same..there is an already large block of disillusioned voters out there and I respect and believe Russell can sort this soon.

kia kaha to he Greens……they are good people

    • Several points on the TV3 angle on this issuer…

Firstly, TV3 has a responsibility to find out what the dickens went on at the Coatsville Mansion between Dotcom, Norman, and Peters. That’s their job.

(Though I wish they follow up the other angles of the botched, illegal raid on KDC as well.)

However, the way TV3 -ort more specifically, Gower – presented the matter (brain fades, etc) – was not only unhelpful, and shed no light on the matter – but turned it into a joke between sniggering schoolkids.

The following item of TV3 News, with Key being a “reptilian alien imposter”, just made the entire 6PM News broadcast a complete farce. It was Paul Henry at 6PM as far as I was concerned.

If TV3 pursues this style of broadcasting, I’ll be watching TV1 News; Campbell Live at 8pm; and listening to Radio NZ at 10pm (which I do anyway).

Enough’s enough, Gower and TV3. Do some serious investigative journalism or don’t bother, and just put “Friends” or “MASH” on at 6.

As for Kim DotCom, the best he can do is fund Labour, Greens, and Mana. Why not? Big money flows into National’s coffers from vested interests, so why not some heavy-duty cash for the Left?

Maybe it’s time that KDC looked elsewhere, for political tactics. Imagine paying one or two thousand unemployed people to hit the streets where non-voting was highest, and go door-knocking. It shouldn’t be too hard handing out leaflets reminding people of Key’s track-record.

And target state housing. State house tenants are next on National’s “hit-list”… http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/politics/budget-2013/8683225/State-tenants-face-high-need-review

If KDC wants to have an impact on Election Day, this is where he should be looking.

      • “If TV3 pursues this style of broadcasting, I’ll be watching TV1 News.”

Indeed, as of recent, TV One seem to be more balanced than TV3 news on a lot of topics. Maybe they did some soul searching after much criticism was read on blogs like this one, about how biased the MSM have become?

Gower is the “enfant terrible” with his “shock factor” on TV3 news. He is basically their “senior” reporter on political matters, so he gets away with bringing his own personal “style”, bias and poor standards. I would suggest TV3 look for a decent, competent and more professional journalist to replace that clown. But who knows what they pay, it may be too little for any good reporter to bother?

      • Frank I agree totally with your comments on TV3, but let me assure you TV1 was no better. Corin Dann did this muppet like impression of casting a shadow over Key’s involvement, when a number of media sources have already explained how the information about Peter’s visit got back to Key.

The point is this. Whether we are left, right or centre, our media should be presenting facts to us as news, they should be investigating analysing and presenting the results to us without fear or favour.

At present they are failing miserably.

      • I couldn’t agree more, I am utterly sick of Patrick Gowers ugly mug saying stupid and totally (politically) biased things on my TV. The only problem is tv1 is no better. Ok tv journalists, we get it, you support national. Now can you try and be credible journalists and try to report the news impartially? I no longer rely on those muppets, they are a joke. I was depressed about the Stuff poll that showed DonKey and his croneys coming out on top.

    • @ Disabled Liberation Aotearoa NZ DLANZ –

After consulting his diary, Russel Norman clarified the dates he visited Kim Dotcom – 1 and 29 November last year.

  3. Winston Peters is absolutely right on this point.

Who visits whom, how and when, and what is discussed, and how and why, is ABSOLUTELY none of the business of this ANTI-PRIVACY National government.

Has Key’s position as director of the National Spying Agency gone to his head?

  4. I agree with M Harvey’s and Bradbury’s analysis re: Greens and Dotcom – I am a Green Party member and prospective electorate candidate myself. However, I am appalled at the misconceptions which attach to Bryce Edwards. I know Bryce and have known him for over 20 years since we were students and activists together at Otago. Bryce is an academic and is doing his job in that respect (and in that regard I may not agree with everything he says in his Politics Daily column either), but I certainly know one thing in that his personal politics are left wing. Bryce also runs a blog called ‘Liberation’ – now that term is not one which is used by the political or intellectual right is it?

    • Thanks for sharing that on Bryce. It’s a shame that his blog seems to more often than not fulfill right-wing agendas if this is the case. I suggest he looks at refining his blog so it covers a range of perspectives rather than privileging that of National supporters as much as it does, particularly when the Herald instance usually has a right-wing biased editorial. Doing a summary of a selection of media commentators as he does usually only serves to reinforce dominant right-wing media messages. I suggest he does an opinion column/blog so it can be more open as being an opinion, rather than making it appear objective as he currently does (and as with all commentary like his blog it is far from the illusion of objectivity), then people might not likely be as influenced by the right-wing media he usually reinforces.

      • Jeepers you guys are hard to please. Bryce Edward’s blog is the reason I found The Daily Blog – and I suspect I’m not the only one.

It is also pretty obvious that he’s not a right winger either, his blog is the most leftwing thing in the Herald aside from Matt McCarten’s Sunday column.

They print Matt’s opinion for the same reason they print Bob Jones’ – because it winds the readers up a bit. The fact is that if you want to genuinely connect with people who get their news from the Herald you’re going to have to start off a long way to the right and I’d hazard a guess that that is what Bryce is doing.
