All week, I’ve speculated on what has really happened with Dunne. This speculation was arrived at after much discussion that were all made off the record last week.
I do not believe Dunne was the source of the GCSB leak. I believe Vance was initially given the information by the same group within National responsible for leaking the Don Brash emails to Nicky Hager. Vance then used Dunne to verify that information.
The group within National set Dunne up so that when the story broke he would be the fall guy and not them, they did so because they were shocked by the lengths the NZ Intelligence community went to in the Kim Dotcom case and were concerned with that community’s sudden expansion of power, staffing and budgets.
Here is the conclusion I draw separately from my conversations.
I think that NZ is being used as a test market for a new kind of control. In the past America has usurped a nation’s sovereignty with armed militias and juntas. This outwardly obvious level of repression reflects poorly on America’s global image and makes things difficult for them domestically. I believe America is now focusing on capturing the Intelligence apparatus of countries and controlling those through access to their surveillance grid.
I fear that is what is happening in NZ and I am left deeply troubled by this insidious expansion of domestic intelligence.
This is a Washington Consensus we aren’t even conscious of.
The mainstream media are still playing catch up on this story, and I suspect some real doubts are now starting to be cast on the Vance/Dunne flirtation narrative and there is a dawning realization Dunne was a reference for Vance rather than the direct source.
The focus should now turn to who was the original leak and what exactly are all these domestic surveillance groups actually doing and for who.
The seppos hardly need to capture the intelligence apparatus of our country – the cringing traitors who act as agents deliver themselves already gift wrapped. What has changed is that now, for the first time, we have a PM who agrees with the intelligence mandarins that their first loyalty should be to Washington. What has been long happening on an informal basis can now be formalised.

I understand where you are coming from Martyn, EXCEPT that I wouldn’t have necessarily associated it with any party political imperative – i.e. the “within National” – other than to the extent that it is National ‘in power’ atm.
Rather, I’d have characterised that ‘same group’ as principled people who had/have a genuine concern for (not only) history repeating itself, but the undermining of democracy and the democratic process; the realisation that what’s going on/has been going, on is a step too far.
Had the whole thing NOT been ‘leaked’ for example, the liklihood is that there could have, probably would have been further sanitised for & by those responsible (for the State’s welfare – from PM downwards).
Shouldn’t that be PM upwards!

Hmm, if the leakers thought they would stall the legislation they have spectacularly failed and, for Nat party insiders, they have a very poor understanding of their own Dear Leader’s modus operandi.
This is turning into a “Who ‘Dunne It’ Novel” and it’s not the butler but a bunch of Blue Patriot Natz ? They/he/she would have to be very high up in the Party machine to have access to all the information in the Kitterage report, or the actual report itself, prior to its release which means one of those people mentioned in the inquiry re the leak.
Not the office boy but another minister ? Why pick on Dunne, an obedient lap dog? Just doesn’t make sense leaking a document that was to be made public anyway. Turning out to be a great distraction when all effort should be in lambasting our compliance with the US spy network, the “Five Eyes” assisting US/UK/NATO in their dirty wars based on lies, making us complicit in the deaths of how many millions since 911? Key bending over backwards to assist US whenever they come calling…Clinton and Pancetta and heaven only knows who else. This happened in the 1990’s when CIA were crawling all over NZ with their union busters prior to the ECA. (leaked memo from the office of MT Albert electorate) Love leakers 🙂 🙂
Why pick on Dunne, an obedient lap dog?
Maybe tptb felt his vacillating position on some matters reduced their confidence that they’d be able to push certain legislation through. If he were to be forced out however, a more obedient and compliant puppy could be installed. If Dunne decided to retire completely and force a by-election, even better.
