Deborah Manning is a very good friend of mine and seeing her join Team Cunliffe in Wellington is just another example on top of Matt Mcarten and Clint Smith’s appointments that Cunliffe is serious about putting together the best strategic team to win 2014.

Deborah is best known as the first lawyer to ever stand in front of the Supreme Court twice by the age of 30, her tenacity at fighting Helen Clark against the immoral incarceration of Ahmed Zaoui has made her a civil rights legend in NZ.

That she would put that history aside to take up a role within Labour is as extraordinary as McCarten’s return to the flock and it shows just how certain they are about Cunliffe’s progressive credentials.

At this rate left wing critics will run out of things to complain about.

The internal reforms that are being implemented within Labour means they will have a far more focused approach to the election.

The. Game. Is. On.

  1. Its a pity that Labour hasn’t applied the same enthusiasm and intelligence to their parliamentary team. I guess you change what you can and hope…….Unfortunately people don’t vote for chiefs of staff and the like (which is a pity because I would vote for Matt and Deborah!!!!!!). Despite my hopes that Cunliffe might bring some real substantive change to Labour, I don’t really have a clue what they stand and what sort of government they would be.

  2. She sounds like a good addition to the team. In response to those who think the whole Labour caucus should be cleaned out to make way for new blood. Just remember that a team composed of enthusiastic young hotheads may look and sound good in theory, but in practice you also need a few old soldiers to keep it balanced and keep feet on the ground. Experience is a political commodity that can’t be bought, can only be earned by time and effort and we shouldn’t forget that.

  3. Two things standing in the way of Labour

Raising the retirement age to 67 (which has yet to be proved as effective, as well as politically wise)

$60 for every child under one (not popular with older voters who see this as yet another blanket handout)

  4. It is hard to get excited when John Key revealed in Parliament today that their in house polling has Labour at 26 per cent. I am afraid I am getting visions of National in 2002. David Cunliffe should be taking every opportunity to get media coverage such as that offered by Campbell Live. A no show in Parliament this afternoon, even if for a good reason, is just giving John Key a free run.

  5. If, as you say, “The. Game. Is. On.” then Labour really had better start playing some ball. In a hurry. Quick. As in NOW. If you don’t run out onto the pitch, you forfeit.

    • They did. Yesterday they announced their ‘game changing’ transport policy, a policy so poorly thought out that this morning it has been revealed that caravan owners will actually pay more in RUC than they save in registration!

Virtually every policy they announce is a failure, or plagued by simple mathematical errors. They are muppets, and at this rate 26% is looking on the high side.
