So how many times have you gone onto Facebook and Twitter boasting about poaching?

So the mass surveillance state legalised by the GCSB wasn’t the start of the Government spying on its population – apparently Government Departments have picked up on a new program developed by the cops to spy on social media.

Here are the bullshit justifications being put forward to justify why these Government Departments are spying on social media…

The Ministry of Health wants to see if Signal can “enhance its response to an emerging public health issue”.

The Ministry of Primary Industries is exploring how the system might “help catch those poaching and abusing animals”.

The Ministry of Justice refused to comment and all three government agencies would not appear on camera.

…I’m sorry what? The Ministry of Primary Industries are spying on social media to catch out people poaching and abusing animals???

How many times have any of you gone onto Facebook and Twitter boasting about poaching? Did the Ministry of Primary Industries laugh their arses off when they gave TVNZ their bullshit excuse as to why they are spying on special media? I would suggest that the MPI are spying on environmental activist groups who might hurt production, they aren’t searching for poachers on Twitter.

The expanding Eye of Mordor that John Key built is a bigger threat to NZ than poachers ever will be.

  1. Just imagine if Labour had done this… the Right Wing would be frothing at the mouth in apoplectic rage! Blood vessels would burst; hearts would seize; and brains would explode in Jackson-like gore, in rage…

But it’s ok. It’s National doing it. So quasi-fascism and the growth of the surveillance state is fine, ‘cos, y’know, Key is popular.

And he’s relaxed about the rise of C.K. Stead’s police state…

    • No they wouldn’t. It is just another form of search engine

I don’t see any problem with this. If you put stuff online, it is public information that anyone or any software algorithm can freely use

In fact, you can buy the product from Intergen for your own personal use, thought it is fairly expensive

      • Of course not, AndyS. The Right were more concerned about light bulbs and shower heads than privacy and personal liberty not to be surveilled by a growing police state…

May be they think we’re all as stupid as the Roastbusters boasting about rape.

    • I use Twitter to tell the world about my poached and fried eggs.
I expect a knock on the door any minute….

    • Random, consider this. Like most people, I open my curtains through the day. This means some parts of my home are visible from the street. And it’s no big deal to me if someone wanders by and happens to glance in. That is entirely different to the Police and various government departments setting up hidden video cameras aimed at my windows, recording all “public” activity, 24hrs a day.

And they’re not just doing this to me. They’re doing it to you, they’re doing it to every one of us. Secretly monitoring us. We’re no longer presumed innocent until proven guilty, we’re under suspicion and being actively spied upon, just in case we do something they don’t like. Well, f*ck ’em.

  3. Well the Nats don’t need to worry about poaching, not with the likes of silly old Clare Curran around. Are Labour deliberately trying to self destruct? It would appear so.
