Winston Peters accuses Broadcasting Standards Authority of ‘Soviet era stasi’ censorship
The NZ First leader is accusing the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) of “Soviet era stasi” censorship, following a decision to begin regulating podcasts and online media.
Winston Peters posted on social media saying it was “blatant overreach” by the BSA and “highly concerning”, and demanded an explanation for their “recent outrageous action”.
“Why does the Broadcasting Standards Authority think they can make up their own rules in secret meetings to act like some Soviet era stasi.”
After comparing to spitting in his food to political violence, Winston goes full Trump with claims that the BSA is using Soviet era Stasi censorship.
Yawn.

Firstly, the BSA is focused on broadcasting, Sean Plunkett’s daily hate broadcast technically falls under broadcasting, it ain’t on radio waves, but it is on wifi.
Secondly the most annoying part of what the BSA is doing is that they are allowing Sean Plunkett to play the victim while allowing the Free Speech Union to look like they aren’t a front group for Zionists.

Winston is a hate grifter who has a 5 decade long legacy of saying repulsive things about minorities and vulnerable people.
This is a man who has built a political career out of dog whistle personal attacks on minority, migrants and vulnerable groups.
Remember what he said about Benjamin Doyle, Rawiri’s facial tattoos, Harry Tam, Migrant Green MPs?
More than any other politician in recent years, Winston thrives on exploiting community divisions for political gain.
For Winston to play the free speech champion is like the Taliban demanding a Nobel Peace Prize.
As for Plunkett, he is a hate grifter who has in the past attempted to claim images of starving Gazans were faked, has claimed Māui dolphins were “the Down syndrome kids of marine mammals” that “deserved to die”, has asked if anyone felt sorry for Harvey Weinstein and infamously claimed he was concerned about a mass outbreak of anorexia in Gaza.
Allowing Sean Plunkett to pass judgment on broadcasting standards is like having a panel of lepers judge a beauty contest.
For Sean and Winston to claim they are free speech champions because of BSA ‘over reach’ is as tedious as it is hilarious.

Aside from the techincal aspects of the law, If you make The Platform subject you also by default make thousands of streams, podcasts, blogs and online shows subject. All must pay a levy and broadcast the complaints procedure by law.
As an example everytime Bomber saus something mean about Winston or Seymour complaints would be made to the BSA and it becomes a shit show
Is the alternative of letting people put audio or video of themselves saying whatever they want on the internet a good thing then? The BSA has a set of standards and broadcasting is a fair way to describe the distribution of content on the internet. See below for a link with a better explanation

Genuine question, would the broad remit that the BSA describe also apply to broadcasts like “The Bradbury Group”? Is it fundamentally any different the “The Platform”?
So if someone got their panties in a twist about something said on “The Bradbury Group” (and it’s the internet so someone will always be “offended” by something), that’d mean the BSA would have to investigate that as well.
