Why Key poked the smug hermit kingdom
People asked me this week if I thought Key’s sudden intrusion into the public debate by poking the smug hermit kingdom was an indication that he was wanting back into Politics.
I laughed.
Key is making way more money in the private sector and he likes being liked.
While there is nothing stopping him from making a return, I just doubt a rich man who likes being rich is prepared to pretend he’s only worth $50million to re-enter public politics.
No, this wasn’t Key standing in for National (although it was meant as a kick in the arse to Judith to show her how to do it), this was Key channeling the anger and fears being felt at the top table of NZ CEOs.
In the rarified airs Key and Luxon inhabit is a shock wave of fear that the sleepy hobbits of muddle Nu Zilind have woken in the middle of a pandemic and in their rush towards the State for protection have wholesale abandoned the neoliberal mythology of small Government and individualism Über alles for a State that is active and protecting.
Key’s ridiculously hollow 5 point plan was all a joke when put under any scrutiny, but his main attack was pretending the Government are using fear as a weapon and that Jacinda is somehow a Communist.
Red baiting and insinuations that your freedom is at risk are the very bedrock ideology of the neoliberal Nazgûl Key represents.
It’s nice seeing the ultra rich so frightened that their free market mantras mean nothing.
Look at 3 Waters, new public health, new RMA, new supermarket competition and universal unionism THIS is the monolith of the active State rising that Key and his chums recoil in horror from.
In a world beset by the external shocks of climate change, people want the protection of the State. The only response by the right is to label that a smug hermit kingdom while forgetting the reason we are so smug.

I’m not a shrink, but Key’s hermit analogy may come from his subconscious level ( vast), because traditionally hermits live alone because they reject society, and in particular women – they’ve always been celibate – and underneath Key probably realises he’s not that attractive without his dosh, and his attitude towards women as exemplified by his hair fetish, is a bit odd- and a shocking example to young Nats and other thickos, about how to treat women. It’s bad enough for women in New Zealand without creeps like him behaving untowardly.
As said before, he won’t go back into politics overtly – he’s too petty and vain anyway, and he got what he wanted, apart from his ego-pandering flag change, which was very impudent indeed. If he wants to get out, then let him go, but bolt the door after he leaves. Nth Korea might suit his wee imaginings.

John Key is a Has-been. He is so ego-ridden that he thinks everything he says is correct and the WORLD MUST listen to him.
He must have been missing being the centre of attention and hence hunting out a compliant NZ media to publish his rants.
For him to use the analogy of a space ship containing 3 people to a country of now 5 million(NZ)was weird in my opinion. But then that spaceship was an American one and we all know Key loves America more than any other country on the planet NZ included.
After seeing his articles scattered through-out the various media outlets around NZ a week ago I came to the conclusion that Key may be wanting to be leader of National again. Whilst he was prime minister of New Zilland he used NZ taxpayers money to fund HIS ego-quests etc. He wasted $26million on a vanity project to massage his ego. He has no hesitation on lying to NZers whenever he could And in recognition of sexual harassment in the workplace he received a knighthood.
Just me “ Whilst he was Prime Minister of New Zilland” is the weirdest thing of all. Key comes from an English speaking immigrant family, but he never managed to pronounce the name of the country which took them in. Not doing so as PM let us down badly, which mightn’t bother him, but some UK media laughed at him. It’s
unbelievable that he tried to change the flag of a country whose name he can’t even pronounce properly.
Yeah Key’s a has-been, but at least he didn’t fork out $55m to pay for compliant journalism like Jacinda in a cash-for-comment bribe. Now all we can look forward to is warm and fuzzy YES articles from woke journalists all agreeing with Aunty Jacinda and her PC policies.
Don’t believe for minute Key didn’t have Soper,Armstrong, Young et al not paid for and in his back pocket. Key had a very easy ride with pro right wing media.

I think the analogy with North Korea is to infer that members of Five Eyes/Quad/AUKUS are in an alliance against socialism – and are thus “not allowed” to practice socialism without consequences.
There being a long American tradition of sanctions against any socialist nation in the world – China, North Korea, Cuba, Iraq, Venezuela, Libya etc associated with regime change …
