World leaders on Thursday expressed hope for peace and urged Israel and Hamas to fulfil their commitments in the hours after US President Donald Trump announced that the parties had agreed to the “first phase” of a deal signalling a major breakthrough in the two-year war in Gaza.
Blessed be the peacemakers? Trump actually said that?

If he actually gave a damn he would have stopped this when he first became President, he is only forcing this through now in a desperate attempt to win the Nobel Peace Prize!
Israel is still bombing Gaza, all Trump has done is choked Netanyahu off Palestine long enough to try and get a Nobel Peace Prize.

It does appear that the killing and abuse will at least diminish for a time, which is an objectively good thing no matter how you slice it.
The first stages of the agreement reportedly entail a partial withdrawal of IDF troops, Israel’s starvation blockade officially ending, humanitarian aid being allowed into the enclave, and both Israel and Hamas releasing captives and stopping the fighting.
Drop Site News reports that according to Hamas sources, subsequent ceasefire phases will entail “No surrender, no disarming, no mass exile, but most of all a permanent end to the war.”
It remains to be seen if there will be any movement toward a lasting ceasefire beyond the first stage. When an agreement was reached late last year it never made it beyond the first phase and then the Trumpanyahu administration declared a siege and resumed the killing.
The far right members of the Netanyahu regime certainly seem like they don’t expect the ceasefire to hold.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a statement that Israel has a “tremendous responsibility to ensure that this is not, God forbid, a deal of ‘hostages in exchange for stopping the war,’ as Hamas thinks and boasts,” and that “immediately after the hostages return home, the State of Israel will continue to strive with all its might for the true eradication of Hamas and the genuine disarmament of Gaza.”
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir issued similar remarks, saying that he and his Jewish Power party will use their leverage to dismantle the Netanyahu government if it “allows the continued existence of Hamas rule in Gaza.”
Netanyahu himself has been studiously avoiding any talk of commitment to a lasting ceasefire, mostly limiting his public statements to the significance of freeing Israeli hostages.
So there’s not a whole lot to feel optimistic about here. If the killing does stop on a lasting basis, it will be a pleasant surprise.
I personally have zero faith Netanyahu will uphold any part of his obligations and the millisecond he gets what is left of the hostages he will go right back to his ongoing violence because the gaol now is wiping Gaza off the face of the earth.
Trump will point to this brief ceasefire and claim that is peace.
Netanyahu will find some reason to keep attacking Gaza.
I am simply too cynical after watching the IDF use appalling violence and justifying it to believe they are capable of any humanity.
Trump wants the Nobel Prize, and that’s the real reason he has pushed Netanyahu into this, but after the butchery and open genocide, there can be no Peace Prize for war crimes this extreme.
The ceasefire however does make NZs position to refuse to recognise Palestine even more obscene.
Trump claims this will be the greatest bestest peace in the Middle East forever.
Let’s wait and see.
There is so much damage caused by Israel and enabled by America to try and rebuild from that I’m not sure the trauma Israel has perpetuated upon the Palestinian people can be healed within 3 generations.

No prize for Trump as he never attended the negotiations where the Arab and muslims out numbered the west .I would suggest it was they that brokered the deal by showing a show of collective show of force .Israel will be shitting bricks now that they realize all the surrounding states have had enough and are joining forces .
How in the hell do we live in hope when so much of our world has turned hopeless? Also, as Caitlin has pointed out, this so-called cease fire could simply mean, “We have to hurry up and kill as many people as possible before it takes effect” – which would not surprise me one iota. Netanyahu is a Monster and Trump an egotist, all about himself and not in the least interested in what happens, just what he expects to gain from it. How has this world bred such depravity and how can human-beings support this indifference to human life? If you are a supporter of this GENOCIDE then you have enabled this. SHAME on you!

or Israel made an agreement because Gaza has already been demolished, job done, and now theyre ready to get cracking on a trump tower and the theft of the Gazan’s offshore natural gas resource.
As commentators and MB have previously said, there is only a very low chance of permanent peace.
I’m fully expecting Israel to invent some kind of context where they can get right back to their genocide work asap after hostages have been returned, and Trumps senile attention drifts somewhere else.
I’d be happy to be proven wrong, but am certain this enshittification will continue at pace.

If that does happen, then more than a few previous recipients will surely return their prizes.
Does the peace deal include Israel quitting her illegal occupation of the West Bank? I have tended to assume that that was what this affair was mostly about. I think Hamas was peeved about the lack progress on this issue, which would have been the reason they took as hostages, people they saw as “trespassers” in that area.
If Trump can’t get the Nobel Prize, he’s certainly very welcome to the Darwin Awards.
Well Trump has continued with weapons and funding so it’s absolute horseshit to say he’s forged a peace deal. He could have could have stopped the Israelis in a heartbeat (yes so could have Biden) but clearly Israel has leverage of some description

Obviously, Trump is no peacemaker. To the extent that he is involved in this fake ‘ceasefire’, a temporary slowdown in the genocide continuously carried out against the Palestinians and other gentiles since their fake state was established, it was solely a matter of giving the Netanyahu regime an excuse (‘Trump made us’) to stop escalating the genocide that the ‘israeli’ public love so much.
Is that meaningful? Not really, but it’s more than the cowardly traitors Biden or Harris, just as much a supporter of the enemies of humanity as Trump is, could ever have done. If other Americans like the psychotic drone murderer Barack Obama, a man who’s never seen an innocent boy or man he didn’t want to rape or kill, can be given the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump certainly deserves it.
