This Government risks civil unrest to bash Māori and allow crony capitalism
David Seymour has accused the Waitangi Tribunal of political meddling after it made confidential documents about the proposed Treaty Principles legislation public.
The briefings reveal officials told the Government the policy could threaten social cohesion and ACT’s proposed principles were a novel interpretation with the backing of no expert opinion.
Beyond Seymour’s tantrum at being busted for pursuing a race war by trashing the Treaty, are the concerns raised that his pursuit of a race war by trashing then Treaty may well result in a threat to social cohesion.
Likewise this Government’s total acquiescence to donors interests and fast tracking powers to dismantle environmental legislation risks civil disobedience…
According to the democracy watchdog Freedom House, there is a global trend towards democratic decline. The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates less than 8% of the world’s populationlive in a full democracy, while almost 40% live under authoritarian rule.
New Zealand is clearly not in the high-risk group. Compared to others, its political and civil rights are exceptionally good. And its legal system, which safeguards many of those rights, is among the best in the world. Other checks and balances, such as the Ombudsman, are also robust.
Unlike many other countries, however, New Zealand lacks robust safeguards against abuses of power. It is one of only five countries (along with Saudi Arabia, Israel, Canada and the United Kingdom) without a written constitution.
But the Commonwealth cousins within that group both have bicameral (two-chamber) parliaments that can balance a government’s agenda and ambition. New Zealand’s Legislative Council, a weak version of an upper house, was broken up in 1951.
The supposed robustness, integrity and established due process of New Zealand’s legal system is likewise up for scrutiny – in particular, the government’s reliance on executive power and use of urgency to pass legislation.
No MMP government has passed more bills under urgency in its first 100 days than the present coalition, far outstripping previous administrations.
It is not necessarily a bad thing for parliament to have the option to pass laws urgently when circumstances demand it. The problem arises when there is no definition of, or required justification for, the use of urgency.
Instead, it becomes a normalised way to sidestep the mechanisms that help create better laws.
…what National, ACT and NZ First are pursuing here is a casual fascism, Kiwis don’t like putting much effort in because putting in effort makes you a try hard.
Brown Shirts, goose steps and street violence is all a bit too much effort for Kiwis, we like our fascism laid back and beneficial for just the donor class and our personal property portfolio.

One of my Internet acquaintances is from Scandinavia – Sweden I think it’s not worth checking now. But wherever it is, they have the assumption that any government document can be obtained by anyone for any reason whatsoever. If you want to protect a document from public disclosure you have to go to court to do it. That’s more transparency than we’ve ever had I think. What really pisses me off are the ones that hide behind “commercial sensitivity”. That’s just egregious.

Labour ,The Greens and the Maori Party need to get along side each other ,find a lot of cohesive commonalities and be ready, not by the next election, but by this time next year.

Maori/Pakeha divide diverts attention from the Asian recolonisation by stealth just as the Nats endeavoured to privatise health by stealth, while like housing, education is becoming a free for all.
Politicians and power brokers don’t care about civil unrest. They won’t be here. The parliamentarians hid in the Beehive during the Parliamentary Precinct protests, and should these escalate further, they’ll be ensconced off-shore in Hawaii sort of places. With the Minister of Police doing sfa to retain the country’s cops, have-nots may have to be controlled by the armed forces. That’s the way it is.
The housing situation is a tragedy for more than the undeserving poor, and Luxon gloating in Parliament like a school yard bully whenever he speaks, trivialises issues which decent responsible adults would address with the utmost gravity. He has none. There’s always been some dodgy bods in Parliament, but they don’t usually get to become PM’s the way they seem to do now.
While this rhetoric plays to the left in a “I told you so” spiel, as much as Hoskings plays to the right extremists in NZ, both ignore the huge gap of ordinary disinterested middle income kiwis who fall between the two.
These are the people who decide elections. These are the people who think politics takes a long second place to rugby and Shortland Street. It’s only when government policies impact directly on them, their livelihoods and their loved ones, that they’ll get off their collective arses and do something.
Unfortunately for Seymour, Peters and Luxon, their finance minister is doing just that. Every public service redundancy affects 30 people roughly (spouses, family and relatives), and that’s where discontent starts and grows.
Seymour thinks parliament is supreme without constraint, but he’s sadly about to be disabused of that notion by the NZ courts. Government and the Crown have obligations that cannot be ignored, and the TOW is one of NZ sacred cows. Mess with and die.
Middle class security and comfort is another political reality, this coalition of chaos is about to learn to its cost, that you don’t mess with. Touch it and die.

The govt is shi__ing on the treaty, threatening the tribunal, and has now removed the first home buyer grant, that was their idea in the first place. If they didn’t think it was any good, why did they come up with it?
Shows this govt’s prior agreements and promises, arn’t worth jack – unless you’re a mega landlord, because then you’ve hit the jackpot.
