Green Party cancels meeting over Darleen Tana
The Green Party has agreed to cancel this weekend’s meeting on whether to invoke the waka-jumping law to have MP Darleen Tana removed from Parliament.
The former Green MP has filed for an injunction seeking to stop the party holding its meeting, planned for this Sunday.
Tana appeared at the High Court at Auckland on Thursday alongside her lawyer Sharyn Green.
Her judicial review is targeted at co-leaders Chlöe Swarbrick and Marama Davidson, the party’s kaunihera (executive committee) and the party itself, over the decision to commission an independent investigation.
Tana’s argument is the investigation was unlawful and not allowed by the party’s own rules, and it was unreasonable of the party to commission the report or use its findings. She also claims unfairness and says she was “induced to resign her membership” of the party.
The Greens promised not to eject Tana by using the waka-jumping law until the court had ruled on the matters raised by Tana, and would cancel their 1 September meeting.
Self appointed Judicial God, Andrew Geddis, breathlessly told us all that Tana had no chance, so what the bloody hell just happened?
The response doesn’t make sense and is politically counter intuitive, so what is actually happening below the surface?
I was there this morning watching proceedings, Tana sat at the end of row I was sitting in wearing a raspberry beret, and it became quickly apparent a last minute late night deal had been cut.
Talking to anonymous sources the state of play has become toxic and awful.
As difficult as it is for readers to comprehend, there is an uber woke clique inside the Greens who believe Chloe and Marama are not woke enough.
I know.
I know.
I know.
Totally insane.
This uber woke clique were behind the attempted Leadership coup against James Shaw, plotted to move Elizabeth Kerekere up the rankings and have acted like ideological stormtroopers to push for identity politics uber alles.
This clique, made up of Green Staffers, fourth wave feminists and non-binary activists are backing Tana and the rumour is that they have provided Tana with a smear file on Chloe and Marama that Tana might have dropped in todays Court hearing.
Realising how far Tana is prepared to damage the entire Party has caused the Green leadership to pause and blink in terror and they have backed down on the meeting to impose the waka jumping powers.
It is a terrible game of political brinkmanship between woke factions willing to damage the leadership at all costs.
We see the woke do this time and time again in NZ activism.
They parasitically burrow into leadership roles in a movement and then impose their pure temple purge and call what ever damaged remnants remain a success.
We saw them do it with the Auckland Pride Parade, the Auckland Students against climate change movement and they are most certainly deep inside the Greens.
Criticise the woke all you like, but sweet Jesus The They/Thems just want it more and are prepared to poison the whole well to get it.
So, the woke clique threaten a dirt file dump in Court, Green Leadership backs down, the waka jumping meeting is called off and a new date on the 12th is set.
There will be 3 outcomes.
1 – The Green leadership gutlessly and cowardly back down and actually allow Tana to remain and they become the new focus point for the non-binary activist clique and the 12th gets dumped altogether.
2 – The Greens just pay her out and she steps down with all the resulting non-disclosure contracts signed.
3 – Chloe says, ‘fuck it’ and pushes again to remove her no matter what dirt she drops.
If the Greens allow her to stay, it will be the death knell to Chloe’s leadership and you will see Green polling dwindle as Labour suck up Greens walking away in disgust.
If the Greens pay her out and move her on, Chloe still has a chance to take the Greens into a meaningful role in the next Government.
If the Greens call Tana’s bluff, the smear gets dropped and the consequences follow.
This entire septic infighting is now a real never ending problem for the Greens.
What a sad state of affairs as the planet melts and desperately needs political leadership.
The real problem is not Darleen Tana, not the woke cliques, not the Green Party but the whole political edifice of the Realm of New Zealand. This is a system designed to be corrupted, and corrupted it will be. The one obvious alternative is Te Whakaminenga, Rangatiratanga, and a genuine democracy with an elected head of state and representatives who are genuinely accountable to those who elected them. Not to a foreign monarch, a party hierarchy, a corrupt mass media or nothing more than their own personal ambitions.
True representation will never occur under NNZFACT because it would spell the end for their tenure or hopes thereof – given the obvious deceptions and outright lies that underlie nearly all their actions
We are all foreign, and we all got here at different times.
Option number 3 is the only one any real leader would take. No doubt option number 1 will be what happens.
From my distance it took the Kerekere affair to illustrate that there are serious problems indeed with Greens factions. I was involved with the Greens during Sue Bradford’s brief time in the Far North and know a number of their local members and supporters and they are not impressed with the current iteration.
I have innocently suggested that they need to pay more attention to candidate selections, bona fides and disclosure. But…if Martyn is right certain Greens knew exactly what they were getting with “They Tana”, just as certain Natzos knew all about “lets go out clubbing” Sam Uffindell.
They should just go for broke and boot They Tana. The dust will settle as it always does, and the Green brand will survive for 2026.

Can’t see it playing out well for the Greens in the long term. Cloe may well retain her support but surely long time party voters, if not already jumped ship, will see the farce the Greens are becoming. Caputured by dodgy list candidates such as Ms Darleen Tana. Yep, she/they may have some support from the Woke membership, and the tick of approval who ticked the Green box, but this kind of shennanigans is not what the old core or want or expect of an MP. But that’s MMP for you and memories fade, priorities shift and times change. Perhaps their Woke supporters haven’t yet had enough.

Mr. Bradbury. I am pretty sure Andrew Geddis was saying “no chance” in the context of a Court’s consideration of the facts and the law. It seems unlikely that he would have factored in the blackmail you have reported and the Greens’ “leadership” playing for time while they figure out how to deal with it. But hey, one good thing – we now find out that the self-serving politician isn’t a “they” after all. She’s back to walking alone.

Depending on how damaging the file is, Tana may not be the only resignation in this matter.
As I pointed out this morning everything political, personal, woke or whatever counts for nothing. In the end it is the law.
Does the constitution or the rules of the Green Party have a specific clause that allows for an independent investigation of the actions of one of its mps. If it does not then the investigation was illegal, it’s findings were illegal and the pressure that forced Tana to resign was illegal.
In short, it’s not the threat of a smear file that has forced Chloe to back down. It will be legal advice to her that she fucked up.
My prediction is that there will be an out of court settlement, if the court finds that the Green Party has acted illegally. The Greens will pay Tana her two years of salary, personal damages and legal bills and Tana will resign.

Whaaaat. That’s crazy. If someone is credibly accused of acts illegal or beyond moral bounds…..then their representation of the political party they represent in parliament must be suspended until an investigation to exonerate or condem the claims is proven – it must be allowed as part of due process. Why would that not be? I do not want a rip off artist like Tana to stay in power on taxpayer dime.
The highly regarded Professor Geddis was unsurprisingly correct. An injunction is a device to stop the other party making things worse on your real case. The Greens think Tana has no case and tactically gave up the injunction they would have won in return for a hearing on the real matter next month. Tana got her way but only until September. She will likely lose in September 2024 as opposed to June 2025. Well done the Greens for following sound legal advice.

Others have equal right to use the pronouns they might deem more appropriate or correct.

One thing is clear, Darlene, in full destrct mode, will be the one who suffers most whatever the outcome.
The big immediate loss is the distraction this bullshit causes from the real political issue of the day – the rogue government currently destroying Aotearoa at breakneck speed.

List MP’s should be required to leave Parliament if they leave their party. Electorate MP’s are allowed some leeway as they have been elected by their constituents. Once this is over, I look forward to all parties in the house ageeing to pass a bill under urgency stating that list MP who resigns from their party automatically loses their seat in Parliament.
