The real reason why rents are coming ‘down’

Rent drops for first time in a decade, data shows
New Zealand’s average weekly rent has dropped for the first time in a decade – but one representative for renters says it’s not necessarily a sign they have it easy.
Realestate.co.nz said, based on its data, the national average weekly rent was down 1.8% in 2025 compared to 2024.
Wellington had the largest drop of the main centres, down 9.7%. Auckland was down 2.5%.

I Love how National pretend that rents going down is intentional on their behalf.
Bullshit.
Their decision to smash Labour’s infrastructure pipeline early in 2024 has had a cascade impact on the economy that has seen over 140,000 Kiwis flee in 2 years.
This massive drop in population is not being met by a jump in migration or students or tourists and that is what is driving rents down, the Governments vandalisation of the economy!
They have screwed up so badly that rents are being forced down because people are fleeing the country!
The ‘drop’ is a joke because most tenants are too fearful of their landlords to attempt to renegotiate rentals.
Yes rents have fallen, but only because National have screwed up so bad!

I beg to disagree with rent reductions we got one only because the roof was over 100 years old and the place was leaking like a sieve. The lovely landlord knew for 10 months since he got roofing contractors in to assess it. Tenancy tribunal here we come. Cheers National
Not everyone wants to own a home .Some like the freedom of being able to move quickly or others can make their money work for them instead of putting it into property. There are good landlords and good tenants who get along with no problems. There are bad landlords and tenants who are in the minority but both make the headlines .
There are also some on the Left who are jealous of those people who work hard to invest in property and make money and secure their future without leaning on the government hand out. Are you one of these Cinder?
Lisa Simpson is a fictional character but still knows enough of the real world to understand that landlords are parasitic. Some are better than others however the extreme increase in house prices compared to incomes is due to those who you call property investors who have relied on multiple central and local government settings to protect their position in society despite the social harm they cause.
You were doing so well Trevor until your right wing spite kicked in, which to be fair to you, your post was always going to end that way. Nasty right wing narcissistic person who certainly has a sense of entitlement about you Trev. No one is jealous Trev, least not of you, another moaning pomme.
The issue is you work hard under this corrupt coalition and go backwards so you r capitalist bullshit doesn’t wash with most kiwis…

Next door to me. Small, very basic, very tidy 3 bedroom house $640/week
A passenger this morning, been in a small 1 1/2 bedroom flat for 12 years current rent $330.
New owners have evicted all 8 flats in the building, major renovations. The four upstairs 1 bedroom flats are being converted to 2 beds. The catch, the entry area is being enlarged and will be called a bedroom, which everyone gets to walk thru, if entering or leaving. New rent $540. Landlord scum are not getting more generous and any drop in rentals look like no more than margin of error
Before Trev and Bob pop along to parrot the party line…
Trev, Bob, how us your working on how much a renter MIGHT save on their average rent.
Hint, it’s sweet fuck all.
No one I know has ever had their rent reduced by their landlord, not even when disruptive maintenance is taking place for weeks or months.
And Trev and Bob can give us their reckons on the cost of relocating to a new “cheaper” rental ..
Hint, it will take months of enjoying a lower rent to cover the moving costs and the upfront costs.
Maybe you’ll have a good landlord who won’t fuck you around with the bond on your previous rental, maybe not..
Come Trev and Bob, give us your thoughts instead of being drab parrots. Show us those big *common sense” brains in action.
Exactly Cinder, no one reduces rent, that’s silly.
