Each year Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) provides child-focused analysis and commentary of the budget.  The aim is to provide an accessible and affordable avenue for the community to come together and hear about how the budget affects children and young people, especially our most vulnerable who live in poverty.

Guest Speakers
Alan Johnson
Alan was the social policy analyst for The Salvation Army’s Social Policy & Parliamentary Unit for over 12 years up until April 2019. He has an academic background in town planning and economics and has been involved in Auckland local government for over 20 years both as a politician and bureaucrat. He is also CPAG’s spokesperson for housing.
 
Professor Peter O’Connor
Peter is an internationally recognised expert in applied theatre and drama education. His research focuses on applied theatre in marginalised and vulnerable communities. It has led to developing cutting-edge models of interdisciplinary praxis that explore the nexus of critical and creative pedagogies, aesthetics and social justice.
 
Dr Sarah-Jane Paine
Sarah-Jane is a Senior Lecturer at Te Kupenga Hauora Māori and Co-Director of the Tamaiora Research Group. She holds science degrees from the University of Otago and a PhD in Public Health from Massey University. Her area of research expertise is in the quantitative investigation of ethnic inequities in health and the determinants of health across the life-course.

Associate Prof Mike O’Brien 
Mike is an Associate Professor at the School of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work at the University of Auckland and has previously been CPAG’s Convenor. He has written extensively on poverty and social security issues. Mike chaired the Alternative Welfare Working Group in 2011. He has also held board positions at Te Waipuna Puawai and the Auckland City Mission in addition to being a member of the Impacts of Poverty and Exclusion Policy Group for the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services. He is CPAG’s spokesperson on welfare and social security issues.

Prof Innes Asher
Innes is a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Auckland, a paediatrician at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland and CPAG’s health spokesperson. She chairs the Global Asthma Network. In recognition of her work. Innes was appointed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to their inaugural Expert Panel on Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in 2017. Innes was appointed to the Government’s Welfare Expert Advisory Group in 2018.
Max Rashbrooke
Max is a well-known author, academic and journalist, working in Wellington. Max writes about politics, economics and social issues. He is the author of Government for the Public Good (2018) and Wealth and New Zealand (2015) and the editor of Inequality: A New Zealand Crisis (2013).

    She wants beneficiaries to wait till next year for “phase 2”, whatever the fukh that is

    Beneficiaries will have to wait till next year for an announcement on benefits , which will then be implemented in 2021
