The Ika Salon opens a window on Islam in New Zealand

Our June 12 Ika evening Salon will open a window on the world of Islam in New Zealand.

With the Syrian exodus presenting the greatest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a potential Brexit described by some as a “terrifying prospect” for Britain’s Muslims, Jews and immigrants, and the tragedy of the Orlando attack, questions about the place of religion in general, and Islam in particular, are never far from the headlines. The Government’s recent and heavily criticised decision to barely raise the refugee quota suggests a hidden opinion of the issues very different from the overwhelming weight of public comment. In this Ika Salon, a young Muslim advocate, Hassan Raslan, will share some insights from his experience as a Muslim New Zealander. Hassan arrived in New Zealand from Egypt 21 years ago as a seven year old. A biomedical engineer, he has become an educator and advocate on matters relating to Islam and being Muslim in New Zealand. He is currently an academic advisor in the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission, the academic branch of the consulate. Not an Islamic scholar or imam, he is deeply involved in many Islamic related community and public activities and concerns.
