    The New Zealand I grew up in would be unlucky if it had one murder a year.
    Now on average we have one murder a week.

    The neo-liberal revolution begun in the ’80s by a Labour government has continued unbroken by every government since.

    Until these neo-liberal economic reforms are reversed. Things can only get worse.

      The prison system is shit, and costs $100,000 a year for each person to be in there.
      All of those locked up should be working, many of them out in the community, imagine here in otautahi we could actually have the two rivers clean if we did this sort of thing.
      Lock em up and throw away the key is the view of undeveloped minds.

  5. There is no “us” and that’s the problem. Identity politics has broken social cohesion and allowed criminals to play victim and justify anything.
    The rule of law breaks when it is not applied evenly.

  6. I knew an entomologist ages ago. She showed me the serried rows of moths, beetles, aquatic insects, etc. – all meticulously labeled, one species differentiated from another through minute (to me) differences, so carefully handled with tweezers and preserved in controlled conditions. It was a kind of amazement to see it all – the diversity of things that most of us never notice. “Eternity is in love with the productions of time” – as someone deservedly famous said.
