  1. As the drums of war beat louder and louder, the question one must ask, what is this country doing to prepare itself?

    Fuel supply will be vital. So will medical supplies.

    Thoughts?

  2. Shakespeare in 1600s almost put his finger on our communications situation today.
    Why would Shakespeare seem out of date? Thought never is.

    SONNET 44
    If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,
    Injurious distance should not stop my way;
    For then despite of space I would be brought,
    From limits far remote where thou dost stay.
    No matter then although my foot did stand
    Upon the farthest earth removed from thee;
    For nimble thought can jump both sea and land
    As soon as think the place where he would be.
    But ah! thought kills me that I am not thought,
    To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,
    But that so much of earth and water wrought
    I must attend time’s leisure with my moan,
    Receiving nought by elements so slow
    But heavy tears, badges of either’s woe.

    But the engineering advice recommended building a hefty wall below the memorial in the park.
    “With this wall installed, the factors of safety increase to above the minimum values currently required by Auckland Council,” the 20-page report said.
    Safety would be “adequate .. for both the structure and the surrounding land”.
    However, it added that slips might still occur below the wall.

    Why would we want an ugly wall to bolster an ugly memorial to an ugly human-failure-induced tragedy with political overtones.
