I think this could be another example of modern pakeha life cutting across Maori practices and cohesion. What is the festival for? the regions should have a set number of places each so all catered for. That’s the cohesion bit, and then there would be overflow to allocate and there also could be a similar festival with a theme different, held a month later perhaps so everyone would get a taste of the spectacle. Places would go first to people who had indicated their interest in second choice if missing on the main kapa haka event. And of course it would be streamed. But there is also the object of bringing the young ones and all performers together enjoying each others style and prowess as connoiseurs.
