During his latest stream of semi-consciousness, PM Christopher Luxon tried to justify the latest example of his government’s hostility to the public use of te reo…. by insulting our nearest neighbour and closest ally. In case you missed the context…
Arts Culture and Heritage Minister Paul Goldsmith had removed all expressions in te reo – including the greeting “tēnā koe” and the word “ Aotearoa” from the invitation sent out to diplomatic guests attending the Matariki celebration. Luxon’s subsequent “explanation?”:
Luxon said the invitation was to an Australian and “it always pays to be incredibly simple and clear – and use English” when dealing with our trans-Tasman cousins.
Foreigners must be quietly astonished that this doofus now occupies the position once graced by Jacinda Ardern. Can’t tell if the track below reflects what the world thinks of Luxon, or what Luxon thinks of people who have to struggle to make ends meet. Maybe a bit of both:

What will it take for the Greens to realise it’s far past time they started talking about this issue?
The Greens can’t decide simply on any matter these days. They are heavily into the colour question and wondering if Greens is an appropriate name in preference to any other colour,; is it fair to single out one? And then there are all the bothersome words in the dictionary that many of us took time to find when we were teenagers – shocking! And there are so many words in the dictionary that have to be sifted through and filtered.
And paper is presently made mainly from trees – does that fit with a tree-hugging culture. Better if made from hemp but the gummint would have to soften up on its obdurate attitude against the herb being cheap and widely and wisely available. If recycled paper goes will that affect our supply of toilet paper? I think there is only one mill still producing it here. Already we hardly do anything for ourselves, would we have to import it too? We might end up shit creek without a paddle, which is rather coarse but we’re getting to the nub of life needed here. Also we don’t make soap in the old commercial factories now in Kiwiland.
Talking about kneading. will we have enough grain for our daily bread without importing probably from Oz. Mr Luxon should think not twice, but ten times, before he opens his mouth especially to our cousins in Australia who are quite volatile at times.
