Statement By ICONZ On The NZ Govt’s Response To The Escalation Of Violence And Alleged Violations Of International Law

The ongoing escalation of violence and the serious allegations of breaches of international humanitarian law in the current conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran have caused deep distress among many communities in Aotearoa. These events have led to widespread calls for governments around the world to advocate firmly for civilian protection, accountability, and urgent adherence to international legal standards.
In this context, New Zealand government’s recent statements and diplomatic positioning have generated significant concern. Many people across the country feel that the national led coalition government’s response has not met the level of clarity, urgency, or moral consistency expected when confronting situations involving large scale civilian harm and potential violations of international law.
There is a strong sentiment that New Zealand’s approach should reflect the principles it has historically championed—fairness, independence, and a steadfast commitment to human rights—regardless of the international actors involved. When the response appears cautious, muted, or uneven in comparison to other global situations, it raises questions about whether our stance is being shaped by external pressures rather than our established values and obligations under international law.
This perceived disconnect between public expectations and the official response has led many to believe that New Zealand is not adequately representing the concerns of its own people, who have consistently called for neutrality, justice, and the protection of civilians in all conflicts. Upholding these principles is essential for maintaining credibility, fostering public trust, and ensuring that New Zealand continues to act as a principled and independent voice in global affairs.
It is critical that New Zealand aligns its diplomatic actions with:
- Firm support for international humanitarian law, applied universally.
- Clear and consistent advocacy for the protection of civilians, regardless of the actors involved.
- Impartial support for investigations into alleged war crimes.
- A foreign policy approach that reflects the values and concerns expressed across Aotearoa’s diverse communities.
A consistent, principled stance is vital not only for the wellbeing of those affected by the conflict, but also for upholding New Zealand’s long-standing reputation as an independent and ethically guided member of the international community.
ICONZ strongly condemn the government’s current stance and clear partiality on this matter and demand that it should reflect the sentiments of the people of New Zealand and values we hold as Kiwis.
