To anyone who thinks Labour’s new immigration policy goes too far and is xenophobic, compare the number of migrants pouring into New Zealand with Australia and Britain.
New Zealand took in on average 14.7 people for every 1000 in our population during the year to June 30, 2016, and Australia took in the next largest figure at a rate of 7.5 per 1000 population. In 2015 the UK took in 5.1 people per 1000 population.
The data demonstrates that New Zealand’s rate of migration is triple that of the UK. With the Government’s heavy reliance on unprecedented levels of net migration to deliver the broken record of a rock star economy, the strain on infrastructure is set to continue.
Labour’s policy is to curb migration by up to 30,000, and raise the calibre of long-term migrants allowed to enter New Zealand. It also wants to crack down on poor-quality education courses, which can provide a back door to residency. This is long overdue.
Immigration encouraged to grow like Topsy has put the country out of whack. Current migration levels have created a housing shortage, put a strain on infrastructure, and created transport congestion on roads, especially in Auckland.
What’s the point of living in a city that can’t get its workers to work on time, or get them home to spend quality time with family and friends? Kiwis are spending more time in cars as they inch ‘one mile a peanut’ along congested roads, or, pushed out of the housing market, are forced to live in their vehicles for shelter.
…The National Party have nurtured and grown the speculative property bubble with open floodgate immigration and fake foreign student education because it creates a false illusion of middle class wealth that keeps them voting National.
Those who have to live with the reality of free market globalisation, the domestic working classes and beneficiaries who compete for cheap rentals, a creaking public infrastructure and low paid jobs, have little agency or voice.
By slashing the foreign student numbers, Labour are attempting to alleviate the immediate pressure for those working classes, but that will only create a moments pause if the infrastructure, social and physical aren’t given the desperate upgrade they need.
Labour are buying time, but the gross underfunding in the system demands more than building in a breathing space because to date the entire Rock Star Economy has been built upon an imported audience.
That National is even suggesting tax cuts when we are failing young people, ignoring 1600 deaths each year from freezing slum lord houses and suicides may be twice as high as officials admit shows just how delusional are politics has become.
The only way National’s Budget last month was ‘left wing family friendly’ was if that left wing family in question was the Khmer Rouge.

Labour will be getting my vote this September. Enough is definitely enough. I also do not like a political party with such a deceitful and abysmal track record such as National knowingly importing a future potential voting bloc to facilitate their socially destructive agenda for enriching the elites.
And OF COURSE many of these immigrants will vote for the party that enabled them .
The political motives are strong for the National party and their reasons to continue with this unbridled , irresponsible immigration setting , – as are their reasons for so many , many years in arrogantly denying what so many govt, business and social services in report after report have been stating.
About homelessness.
About the housing crisis.
About deliberately underfunded and inadequate infrastructure.

It’s a sensible, well thought out policy, and one I suspect the Greens aren’t too unhappy with. Nor should Winston/NZ1 be.
What it doesn’t address are some of the many issues in Dr. Christina Stringer’s report – as far as the system and mechanism that enables it all. Such as corrupt and shoddy agents and consultants. BUT THEN IT IS AN IMMIGRATION POLICY – not a policy on how all those who’ve been subjugated and ripped might be compensated, or how the system can be improved (such as properly resourced and independent INZ and Labour Inspectorate – and indeed NZQA)
As you suggest though, watch the traffickers scream like hell and concentrate on bits and pieces of the policy in order to progress their agendas. They must be getting scared.

Yes, this country has more immigrants living here as per capita of population, as most if not all so called “western” countries.
It has had higher immigration over not just the last few years, over the last decade or more actually, thank the UK, Canada and USA, and they are at times moaning about the challenges and pressures they face there.
Only with a docile or put to sleep population like the Sleepy Hobbits in NZ Inc. can a government get away with such policies. Bribing them, making them hooked on immigration, as that is what keeps the economy “growing”, all else is not that ‘hot’.

The big problem we have with the Auckland Housing Ponzi Scheme is pricing is at it’s peak, the Banks are reluctant to add any more fuel to the fire and the Housing Bubble needs finance and buyers.
With pressure on Auckland’s Infrastructure and the likelihood of a change of Government, there could be changes to New Zealand’s Immigration Regulations especially with an influx of 60-70k immigrants into Auckland annually.
Another factor is the underlying land prices in Auckland have got extremely high hence speculative building is a highly risky business which the Banks are reluctant to get involved in, we basically have a Catch 22 Situation ?
