Pedro many of Maori people have a thing about hats if you go back and look at very old photos many of our Kuia and kaumatua wore hats, they just loved them. As for the tie issue this is more about power and control. Also many east coasties that is our people from the East Coast see themselves as cowboys. I often wear hats I am wearing one now as I write. We use to have annual rodeos in Uawa and our some of my whanau were top horsemen out there with their cowboy hats.
