  1. “Personally, I feel like the underlying motivation for some of these viewpoints has less to do with workplace issues per se, and is more based upon generic opposition to Labour and/or the substantive idea of women in politics. “

Damn right, Curwen. As usuall, point well made. Even Dame Shipley was more accepting of Ardern’s situation and gave a pointed warning to trolls (Radio NZ, Friday) to BACK OFF! The trolling of Ardern has more to do with naked misogyny than anything else. The vile comments on Kwiblog and Whaleoil are evidence of that.

  2. Now Winston will be PM, which is where this has always lead up to. All is reavealed. our democracy is a sham, we will have a PM wtih five percent of the vote. And yes, Ardern lied by ommission. Bye bye MMP.

      1. Is it? The Government was announced in October 19, and Jacinda is expecting in June – that’s 9 months by my count. This suggests she very possibly (definitely, depending on when she gives birth in June) knew she was pregnant during negotiations.
That said, I maintain this is one of the biggest non-stories of the year, since Jacinda will still be the PM during her maternity leave, and will be more than capable of making any important decisions should they arise (unless in the unlikely event of complications during birth).

        1. Indeed. To a libertarian who believes a fetus is a person (or is just concerned about the slippery slope of treating them otherwise) then it harms the mother is a potentially valid freedom vs freedom argument, whereas it economically inconveniences the mother would be far weaker. Especially given that libertarians generally have a poor record of seeing the degree of importance one’s economic condition has on one’s meaningful freedoms.

I could be considered a utilitarian not a libertarian on this matter so difficult economic situation is acceptable to me, and while being PM and an expected mother may help the many, it does have Consequences that might outweigh the benefits” is an argument, the lack of social unrest or slippery sloping indicates that concern is not especially well founded in this case. By comparison abortion because of difficult economic situation is a position that would obviously cause serious social unrest and probably slippery sloping, so utilitarianism certainly wouldn’t extend to right wing extremists views around the PM and foetuses.

    1. Get over loosing MILES will you.

Miles, it was o/k for you to just sit there, while we (who hated John Key) ‘who is the shifty speculator’ ruling over us for nine years selling everything the taxpayer owned that he possibly could then!!!!

So now it’s your turn to suffer as we did for nine years.

      Bye bye speculators and carpetbaggers.

Welcome to our Winston ‘the warrior from the north’.

  3. I listened to the press conference just after the announcement as I drove down the coast yesterday. The general atmosphere was jovial and delighted. And I ‘m pretty sure this will be the general feeling around the country and the world come to that.
All politicians have a private life it is to be hoped, and this is just a part of any normal person’s private life. But few are in a position where so much help can be available. David Lange had a tummy tuck operation while in office didn’t he? That must have taken time out of his responsibilities, and just instead of eating less.
Everyone I know thinks it’s great.

    1. 100% well said David.

We should now return to a “caring softer warmer society” from where we came from.

Shed the cold shackles of bitterness and rejoice in our new baby to enter our lives as part of “our first family”

      “Lets do this”

  4. It will be interesting with winston in the hot seat for 6 weeks – I bet national party bums on seats in parliment over this time will be far and few between.
They know winston will not tolerate their garbage, and give back far better than he gets.
I think I will watch parliament TV over this time.

    1. Absolutely true there Kim Dandy, I thought that too.

Winston knows all the road blocks and diversions the opposition would attempt to use and will use the time to “clean house”.

  5. Surrogate Mark

There are some who know everything and pontificate relentlessly.

One of these super capable persons is the perfect Mark Richardson.

Now, if he thinks a woman, any woman, should NOT become pregnant, then he should do the honours for her and deliver a baby from his own magnificent manly internal and external organs. A nine month slog to the Boundary.

The brain bit will no doubt be a problem in Mark’s case. But plenty of brainless media men are there to assist him, or to cover up for him, at silly mid on.

Which reminds me. Will we get Labour to sift through our strange and expensive Media mess ?

  6. In a desperate attempt to not be outdone by Jacinda, and again failing miserably, Paula Bennett has just, coincidentally, announced she’s had gastric bypass surgery. She apparently struggled on whether or not to go public. Is this blatant and frankly creepy one-sided rivalry thing Bennett’s got going obvious to everyone else, or is it just me? She’s like the envious bridesmaid who turns up to a wedding in an expensive yet ridiculous hat, in a pathetic attempt to extract attention from the bride.

  7. Good on her but Frankly I don’t care! I leave that stuff to Womens Own, Womens Day!
What I am really concerned about is Labour signing the TPPA!!!!!!
If they sign they are just Neo-Liberal Lite!
If Labour sign their Coalition Partners need to walk out and we have another General Election with the Gloves off!
