IPCA finds police officer’s use of force on woman who gave him ‘thumbs down’ was unlawful
After a woman signalled the “thumbs down” at a police officer when driving past him, he pursued her and ripped her top as he tried to grab her, exposing her underwear, and then tried to enter her home.
The “distressed and panicked” 48-year-old woman inadvertently slammed the officer’s hand in her sliding door as she ran inside, badly cutting him, and was subsequently pepper-sprayed.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has lambasted the officer for his actions, finding they were unlawful and disproportionate.
Police, however, disagree with the findings, having conducted their own investigation and concluding that the actions of the experienced officer were lawful and justified.

To escalate such an innocuous interaction to this farcical level is NZ Policing at its most ugly.
“Respect My Authority” Is Not the Law
They want ‘Respect Ma Authority’ level power where mere disobedience equates to lawful justification to shoot.
In the wake of the cover ups in the McSkimmings scandal, we urgently need checks and balances above the NZ Police, this example and the morality that justifies it is another piece of evidence towards that argument.

When police feel entitled to punish disrespect instead of enforce the law, the danger isn’t the public — it’s the uniform.
Respect for law and order, respect for the Police, is not the practice of those who’ve been on the wrong side of the law.
I think that the problem is the assumption the police have, derived from watching too many US cop shows, that their function is to “enforce” the law which surely is the role of the courts?
A lot of them really are scum. They even protect non-sworn personnel when they violently assault decent people filming them- see for example this case, which does confirm that it is 100% legal to block the view that a speed camera van has of cars driving past, and film the loser operating them if he attempts to get you to move on. Don’t do this by the side of state highways where one isn’t supposed to park, of course, that may be criminal.

Typical tree hugger happy to have speeders get away with their crime and eventually kill an innocent family. Hope you are proud .
Reckon most coppers are itching to have gawd-like, ICE power. Not that coppers are necessarily bad, but c’mon, who wouldn’t want total impunity.
But again, coppers are a reflection of the politicians that empower them, and the polies, of course, certainly in YankLand anyway, they are all bought and paid for.
Perhaps they want to be like the Iranian authorities ?
Apples to oranges. Iranian authorities are fighting armed and trained infiltrators, whom are responsible for a significant number, if not the majority, of Iranian deaths while ICE is fighting Joe Public. Iran was fighting a foreign-backed insurrection. The US Govt is increasingly imposing itself on its own citizenry.
